Do you know anyone who has used it? Does it suck? I'm shopping for a laptop and I don't know whether to go Wifi or get the built in cellular thing.
coma
I have some friends that use it. A couple of them are on the road a lot, so its beneficial to them. Me, personally, if I'm visiting with a client or out of town I can usually pick up a wifi signal somewhere whether I'm in an airport or at a hotel. If not, I can still check my email and get on the web with my cell if I need to. I think it all depends on how often you'll be traveling with your laptop.

Rarely, if ever. I'm getting a laptop to free up space in my house and to get Bishop to stop chewing on the mass of computer cables down there now. I don't need the laptop to leave my house. I just figured that's the way technology is going so might as well be prepared. Besides, the monthly service is $60 with Sprint and I already pay that much for Comcast Cable.
Heather
I'm trying to get a laptop that is basically the same as the desktop I have now, but I don't really know what is equal to what. Here's my desktop:

There's some dumb stuff on there that I can't change. Fingerprint reader? rolleyes.gif Anyway, I know the monitor is smaller, but that's ok. I want the laptop to run basically the same as my desktop except I don't need as much storage space. I never come close to getting full.

First I would tell you to get WiFi and not one of the broadband providers built in. You can get a card to put in to the computer from a wireless provider it should just slide in. Building it in limits your choices.

As for the comparison of the pc's the processor is slower but it has more memory. If youa re a heavy user I don't know I would give up a desktop for a laptop I would have them both one you can move around with the other as one you can use heavily. That is just my opinion though.

Best advice leave your options open for service.

Last time I checked most had around 5GB download limit, worthless if you watch videos, transfer big files or alot of pictures. If you go over the limit you paid for it. Plus speeds aren't even close to what you get with comcast. I wouldn't recommend it yet if you don't need to have moblie internet access.

I know people that have it and it works for them. I would love to have the option but the download limit and slow speeds is a turn off for that price.
SMan
Why would you consider mobile broadband if you likely won't travel with the laptop? Just hook up cable or DSL at your house for basically unlimited data and likely cheaper. These days, you really have to be out in the sticks to not find some coffee shop, hotel, restaurant, etc. broadcasting a free wifi signal when you are out and about.

Specs look good but I would try to bump the hard drive up to a 7200rpm drive and if they still offer XP as an option I would get that instead. Vista looks nice but it really takes a hit on performance.

Pretty much what I was getting at.

Heather, go here (www.techbargains.com) to get a coupon for whichever system you buy. When I bought my HP, I increased a lot of the specs because I had a 40% off coupon; I got a $2200 laptop for about $1300.
SMan
I was shooting from the hip and responding without reading everything. When I realized the folks who had posted in the thread, I figured it was covered. wink.gif

PS - my first response was going to be "get a Mac". tongue.gif
Heather
The only reason I was looking into mobile broadband because it was an option when I was building the computer a component at a time. It asked me if I wanted the wifi card or the built in cellular thing. I checked the price of the service and it's the same as what I'm paying for Comcast now, so I figured if the mobile broadband is better, why not? I clearly did not realize that the service put a limit on data and was slow. So screw that. I'll do the wifi card thing.

Vista is the only option available. I read the comments and reviews and most everyone hates Vista and say that Dell should make XP an option. So far, it's just Vista though. Should I maybe wait longer and see if they don't make an XP option available? I figured Dell had some sort of contract with Windows to ensure that all new stuff would be loaded with Vista. All the user comments kept griping about the blue screen of death.

ohmy.gif Tony get that snake outta here! tongue.gif I don't want two computers though. I just want one with less cables and one that will allow me to ditch this fatty L-shaped desk that takes up a whole room. I have a perfectly nice dining room with kitchen table that never gets used. I can just sit there and use the itsy bitsy laptop.

I don't know how to use a Mac. Is it hard?

Alright then here's the thing. I watch movies and videos on my computer and I also have a bazillion pics on there. I'm not going to the broadband mobile service, I'll get the wifi card, but now I gotta get a bigger hard drive? Like how big? Bigger than my desktop? I don't think I'll be able to afford this even with a coupon. sad.gif Why they have to load it up with crap I don't need is frustrating. They keep sticking that stupid fingerprint thing on there.

OH! And a lot of the reviews said the speakers suck. Do you think they'd suck that badly that I couldn't watch a movie? I just need to figure out how to hook my computer to my tv. That'll be my next thread.
Heather
Oh. 7200rpm hard drive. Lemme go build another one. Hang on y'all.
Heather
Wait - it's slower than my desktop? But I should I get a bigger hard drive to fix that? wacko.gif What?
SMan
I was just kidding about the Mac stuff, mostly trying to give coma a hard time. You're on the right track with the Dell laptop.

If you're watching movies on your laptop and want to stay streamlined, how about just using a comfy set of headphones instead of add-on speakers?

The 7200rpm hard drive just means it spins faster, making data access a little quicker. It's in the "nice to have" category, but IMO not necessary for your uses.
Heather
I didn't think I was adding on speakers. It already had the lowest sound option selected. It won't let me downgrade the audio option. See -

It won't let me pick exactly what I want. It makes me pick from varying packages. On some things, if I select a certain option, it takes away a bunch of other options. Can't I make them leave off the fingerprinting stuff and the web cam and the online backup crap?
SMan
If you can't get it configured online, you'll have to call them. Years ago, I wanted a computer from them with nothing on it buy Windows. No AOL trial, no Dell backup software, no nothin'. I had to call them to get it because there were no such options in the online configurations, but they did it without a hassle. Hopefully these things you don't like aren't built into the hardware and impossible to remove.
coma
I would call them anyway because they might offer you a better deal over the phone. They (Dell) did that for my sister. Just create your Dell account and configure your system the best you can and call them up. They can look at the system you've configured so that you don't have to tell them every piece of hardware you've selected. Then just tell them what you want and don't want and see if they'll do it for you.
SMan
Also, take a look at Dell's outlet store. There can be some sweet deals in there.

http://www.dell.com/outlet
Heather
Maybe I'll just buy a new fridge instead.
SMan
Have you shopped for those lately? There are so many options, it's not any easier. laugh.gif
Heather
Ok boys, how did I do?

I'll stick my foot up your quad core, Wrangler! laugh.gif tongue.gif

Well, the idea was to get rid of cables and free up space, but after I bought the laptop, the thought occurred to me that I still need to print. My printer is a huge chunk of junk. Will I be able to hook the laptop up to the printer for when I need to print? sad.gif I didn't even think about this before. Jen has a laptop and I asked her. She said my printer might not be compatible.

I HAVE to have a printer here for school papers. It's not a luxury. Especially when I'm cranking out papers at midnight that are due the next day. It would be easy enough to forego a printer and email my papers to myself at work for printing, but the programs at work are always more up-to-date and never compatible to the crap I use at home. I guess I could ditch my home printer and steal Microsoft Word for my laptop somehow, eh? I once downloaded a full version of PhotoShop from Limewire a loooong time ago. It was prolly just a big, fat virus though. I never even used it.
SMan
How does your current old printer connect? USB or printer port (big chunky cable with like 20 pins in the end)? Your new laptop probably won't have the printer port hookup, but you can get a new printer with USB connection for like $50. I'm fairly certain you can only buy USB connection printers these days.

old, fat printer cables look like this

USB printer cables look like this
Udmas
I think you can wireless printers now.
SMan
Wow. I didn't realize that. It's been so long since I bought a printer, I haven't been keeping up on it. Last time I checked, you had to buy a wireless print server to tie into your home network.

And I see some for less than $150.

Heather

If you are a student then just buy a student version of office. It will cost you maybe a hundred bucks and will be all nice and legal.

Tony
Udmas
My boss bought one but he wouldn't let me do the wireless setup, he wanted it wired.
Wrangler3
If you keep your desktop you might be able to network your old printer.

HP likes to drag its feet on updating Windows OS drivers. They just released drivers for my HP printer not long ago. I always had to switch back to XP to print anything. Major PITA!!
