The same thing happened to me.... some sales guy from APX came to my door and begged me to get the security system.

Did you buy?
SmokeChaser
They came through my in-laws neighborhood, they had no problems. They now have a security system from them, and have had no problems with the actual system either.

I was very tempted, they guy seemed really nice and told me he and his guys would install that day and it was over $2,000 equipment for free. I would just pay th $40 a month kind of thing. However, something told me deep down there was something fishy going on. Congrats to The Herald Mail who did an excellent analysis on this whole ordeal. Apparently all those sales people came all the way from Utah! Frauds! Scam! And the Hagerstown City council gave this scammers sales permits! We know which side our city is on. mad.gif laugh.gif
PhilPhanatic
Ah, there we go, blame the government.

I came home one night around 10pm and this dude was sitting on my lawn. I was like, "wtf is this guy doing?". I asked him if he was okay (didn't see a car nearby) and he said yeah, he was just talking to my neighbor. The following night he knocks on the door and told me the same thing.. it was free, etc.. I told him no I have a dog, a baseball bat and a bag of golf clubs. biggrin.gif

My version of APX...

golbblog
They came through my neighborhood and my wife sent them packing. I am calling the cops the next time I have anybody like that come to my door. There are crooks out there with a scam going door to door "selling." The first empty house they come across gets burglarized. This has been fairly common in Fairfax and Montgomery Counties.

Wow, that's pretty scary. That he was sitting on your lawn at 10:00 p.m.

And that you golf. biggrin.gif

Seriously, though, what's the proper protocol for when someone like this shows up at your door? Do salesmen like this have an actual license that they're supposed to show to you so that you know they're legit? If you don't feel like you're in immediate danger you should just call the non-emergency police number, right? What's the latest time of the evening that they're allowed to knock on your door?

According to the city ( I am no expert here) they have to have a peddler's license.

Yeah, if you don't feel like you are in danger you should call the non emergency number if your gut tells you something is odd.

I would have kicked the guy out sooner if he started to try and convert me intoa mormon. (He's from Utah).

I have a hilarious story about Mormons visiting me and my best friends when we had our apartment in college but I can't post it here. I'll have to save it for a lunch. wink.gif
SmokeChaser
Oh man, I have to be at that lunch. wink.gif
Udmas
I didn't have any problem with them, I told him no, he kept on talking so I asked him if he wanted to find out what my security measures consisted of, he said have a nice day and left.
Ithlilian
People come to my apt building all of the time trying to "get money for college" by selling overpriced magazine subscriptions. I tell them I am not interested and they keep one talking. I shut the door in their face. End. Then a week later another person will come, and a week or two later another...

These APX people sound bad. It's not ok to pre date the sale, but then again I don't think you could pressure me into something that was that expensive that I didn't want. I'd call the cops if I couldn't shut the door in their face.

Also:
Do you get those messages on your phone about your warranty expiring, and to press 2 if you don't want them to call again? After you press 2 though, they DO call again. If you try to stay on the line to talk to someone no one ever picks up. Not cool.
Udmas
I think they do that crap to get around the do not call list.

If you press 2 then tell them you're on the do not call list they tell you that you called them by pressing 2. rolleyes.gif

Now that I think about it, the sales guy was wearing a white shirt with black pants? Hmmmm..... anyway I would love to hear this story of yours.

Maybe the City of Hagerstown should take a deeper look into salemen business practices before just handing out permits for these sales people like APX. wink.gif

I'm getting these on my personal cell, work cell, and my desk line at work. Freakin' ridiculous!

My bro in law's house was burglarized a few months back. Within 24 hours, alarm company salesmen were combing his neighborhood at all hours trying to sell systems. They must stop by the local PDs and check where burglaries are occurring and hit people when they are vulnerable. I don't care if they install it for free, it's the monthly fees that will add up.

And if the damn thing goes off by accident, you get fined after the police have to show up at your house a couple of times. We have a couple of those Apx signs around the neighborhood.

They have a bad rep, read this, or this. I did the old google news search, and lots of hits came up on APX.

And I guess some of their employees are shady.

my mom invited the one guy right into our house while we were having dinner, and he walked in and acted like he owned the place. He pointed out our vulnerabilities (if someone would break in) kind of thing. I was about to point him out the door, but my parents of course would consider that rude....I'm telling you these days, you gotta watch out for yourself its not safe, its getting scary in the world we live in today. Some of the nicest people can be those dirt bag criminals!
SmokeChaser
I talked with my mother-in-law last night about their encounter with APX, just to make sure I hadn't lost my mind. She said they had no problems with the salesman, the installation, or the system itself. I guess they had the only nice guy in the bunch. See I didn't lose my mind after all. wacko.gif

Basically if it is not the local fire/rescue or a local kid selling, I'm not buying anything from a door-to-door guy.

I know for a fact that after some "magazine salesmen" came around one neighborhood a few days later a rash of thefts took place. Coincidence?
changeisgood
Is it just me or do other people get calls from the local fire department? Police Department? They call me every week and actually tell me what I'll be donating! Its insane~
SmokeChaser
I've found they may be calling on behalf of the local departments, but they are in no way dicrectly affiliated with them or even calling from Hagerstown.
SMan
I find that the truly local ones make it a point to emphasize that they are really local and the donations stay local. I just got a soliciting letter from this county's FOP lodge where they put the phone number for the local lodge in the letter so you could call and verify.
momof3
We get the ones thanking us for donating the prior year and then trying to sell us the gold or platinum membership. Then find out it's for the State Trooper widows/children fund in Seattle. AND we've never donated to them before.......

Yes we are getting the warranty calls on our cell phones. I have pressed #2 to opt out as well. I did the "do not disturb registry" with all of ou cell pones numbers too......What a joke!

We live in a private neighborhood so we really do not get much soliciting here other than neighborhood kids selling things. A few times we've had someone come up here (house it is not visible from the road and long driveway seem to deter people) to solicit us to re-seal our driveway and cut down trees for a cheap price. We actually used the guy to reseal the driveway. Even though he was a bit shady, he did nice work.

I usually just tell the people, "send me something in the mail" and then they do, only to find out its a letter asking for money for the Fire department in another state. Its a shame, I would love to support our local fire department. I get hot under my skin just thinking about it. Where do you even find the Do not call list number?

Change-I say the same thing & never hear back--I often say, you called me, therefore you have my information. I do not give out over the phone--anything! biggrin.gif

Did anybody really read their contract? They were selling only the equipment and did not guarantee that it would function as advertised. It also stated that even if one could that APX were negligent when and if the system failed one could only collect $1000.00 Sound like a good deal to anyone.
Ithlilian
The don't call list sounds like it only applies to home phone lines, not cell phones. It's wasting my minutes waiting to press 2 or to wait to talk to someone that never picks up to have a company not call me, home phones don't waste your minutes.

Can I register my cell phone on the National Do Not Call Registry?

Yes, you may place your personal cell phone number on the National Do Not Call Registry. The registry has accepted cell phone numbers since it opened for registrations in June 2003. There is no deadline to register a home or cell phone number on the Registry.

You may have received an email telling you that your cell phone is about to be assaulted by telemarketing calls as a result of a new cell phone number database; however, that is not the case. FCC regulations prohibit telemarketers from using automated dialers to call cell phone numbers. Automated dialers are standard in the industry, so most telemarketers don’t call consumers on their cell phones without their consent.
Ithlilian
Excellent thanks. I just read the front page and saw home lines.

I received a call from the fraternal order of police a few years ago and as soon as I got off of the phone I called the police and they told me that, "It wasn't them, and that they would have an article in the paper announcing their plans to do a fund raiser and also they would give out their local (Unit number always) if it were them.

I know one year a group of people were going around the neighborhood selling a box of cleaning products for $30. It turned out to be 6 bottles of Awesome (great stuff) which you can buy at the dollar store for $1 a bottle. I do not want these hoodlums coming to my house! mad.gif
