Are you ready? Could you take care of you and yours for at least 2 weeks? Your government recommends that you should be able to do so. wink.gif

WVDragonlady
what? no opinions? blink.gif

you really should think about it. remember New Orleans wink.gif

I'm ready -- I still have all that duct tape and plastic sheeting from 2001!
WVDragonlady
ah yes. the good ole duct tape and plastic. laugh.gif It's probably still on the list somewhere at the Ready.gov blink.gif wink.gif

Some guy in my speech class did a topic on this. The HM did a topic once too.

I know safe points to run to, but if I had to stay in my house, I would not do so well. I don't know any of neighbors either. Hey, that's another thread. Yeah?
WVDragonlady
I would think your folk's place would be a good bug out location for you.
Heather
Meh, yeah but what if that's too far? Sure, if I had enough time to get there, but if something happened quickly, I would be doomed. The guy in my speech class talked about clean water. I asked if my Brita filter was ok and he didn't know. With all the obvious problems I've been having with my mower, I imagine someone in the neighborhood would say, "get that dumbass in here."

My mower was backfiring laugh.gif and then it wouldn't start at all. Several times this summer I've gotten half of my lawn mowed when the mower quit and then some kindly neighbor finished my lawn while I was work. Then later, after dad fixed the mower, I couldn't get the mower to turn off. laugh.gif Honest to god it's been a fiasco with the mower this summer. I know people have been witness to it because they've mowed the rest of it and then one day there was a broom leaning on my door. I think someone was telling me to sweep my driveway. Yeesh.

But anyhow, I know there are people that prepare intensely for emergencies almost like it's a hobby. If that's you, watch "Right at Your Door." It was a decent movie on the same subject. Not a horror movie, though some classify it as that.

Here's the trailer. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WV32U3wq-wI There's no supernatural stuff or anything.

You need to put together a bag for your car. Have in it one or two changes of clothes, nutrition bars, bottles of water or a small filter that you can get at Dick's in the hiking section. A Brita won't clean rain water or stream water. You need to have enough stuff to get you to your folks place. Lighters, map(s). smashed roll of tp,hand sanitizer, soap, wash rag, towel. If you wear heels at work, keep sneakers or hiking boots in the car. You should also keep some clothes and things at your folk's place.

I have in mine:
mess kit
small camping stove with fuel
lighter
fire strike
plastic bags ( zip locks gallon bags and a couple of store bags for storing dirty stuff)
ramien noodles
Luna bars
instant coffee and some tea bags
instant oatmeal and dehydrated fruit
extra socks, undies
tank top
t shirt ( when it gets cooler I'll add a long sleeve shirt)
capris ( right now, when it gets cooler,I'll switch them out for pants)
bandannas ( good for sweat, or bandages or even washing with)
tp ( cardboard core taken out and smashed and in ziplock bag)
soap ( small one left over from a motel)
dish soap ( I have some in a small plastic bottle thats for shampoo and stuff when you travel)
small hand sanitizer ( I like the travel sizes for this kind of stuff)
wash cloth and towel ( not a big one, one thats called a "sports" towel)
extra meds
small first aid kit
compass
multi tool
rain poncho and hat

thats all right now. I still need some small stuff yet. Like some maps of the area,a hiking water filter to refill the bottles of water. I'm usually in sneakers but when it gets cooler I may need to find room for my hiking boots in the bottom of the bag. Lots of this stuff is compact and the food and drinks are dried so they take up less space. I vacuum seal the extra socks and panties so they stay clean and dry. I should add an extra poncho because it can be used to make a shelter. That and some paracord. I also need to get a space blanket to stick in there. You look like a leftover burrito but they do keep you warm lol I'm also working on my C&C wink.gif

Thats just to give you an idea. It's to get you where you need to be. It should be good for at least 3 days. Longer would be better, but that would mean a much larger pack.
Heather
I would not know how to use a compass!

This thread is crazy fun to me and seriously, I'm not a girly girl. But I've started watching Lost, and I've tried to have fun "what if" conversations with my friends about who would do what and they don't even play the "what if" game with me. sad.gif The only thing they say is, "you'd have a sunburn from hell."

Well duh. But hey! I know enough that I should smear mud on me in effort to block the sun.

I've seen those "adventure vacations" online before and they've always caught my eye. Maybe I'm a Locke in disguise. wink.gif

WVDragonlady
Locke is THE man IMO. laugh.gif I think I'd want to stay on the Island myself. Just to hang with Richard and his manliner laugh.gif wink.gif

theres nothing wrong with being able to take care of yourself in an emergency. having shelf stable food and water to use and drink is just good common sense. what? ya gonna wait for the .gov to come rescue you? rolleyes.gif

think of this: what if the power went out for a week?

what would you do? how would you eat? how would you bathe or even flush the toilet ( if you're on a well)?

ChipStewart
I've got a client who runs a disaster preparedness web site:

http://safehavens.biz

It's got a ton of useful info and some very interesting products.
WVDragonlady
it was ok. I've come across better. most of the sheeple won't even think to try to take care of them selves. they truly believe that the gov should do everything for them. rolleyes.gif I'm thinking they'll be in for a surprise and be every disappointed. laugh.gif

I wonder how many Americans out there that would be up the task undertook by the Bielski brothers, depicted in the movie, "Defiance" - http://www.defiancemovie.com/ . Some day, maybe in our lifetimes, our character and grit may be put to such a test.

...
WVDragonlady
ha. the majority of the american sheeple will be sitting on their duffs waiting to be taken care of. they don't want to have to be expected to do anything but talk on their cell phones and drive their suv's. they wouldn't last a month if TSHTF. wink.gif

You and I think alike!
WVDragonlady
I certainly won't be waiting on .gov to take of me and mine. We're just fine thank you. You can move on to the lazy sheeple down the road, they're waiting on you wink.gif laugh.gif

I wouldn't know where the closest apple orchard is. And I live in Martinsburg.

I guess I'd be a worker bee. I can't slay dragons or deer.
