RUN...

It's seems like it was just 17 years ago... smile.gif

I was pretty young then but I can still remember the noise.

Oh well should be a great summer for fishing!

GreedyXJ AKA Greedyfly
Yossarian
Noisy little suckers! Last time they hit, I was living next to a heavily wooded area. The noise was like chainsaws! This time, there are very few trees around my house in a fairly new sub-division.
SMan
Wow, 17 years already. I remember fishing the last time they were around. You could literally put anything on a hook, throw it in the water, and have a fish grab it immediately. Ah, to be 13 again.....
WVDragonlady
Oh,brother! Guess the pool skimmer is gonna be over flowing! sad.gif It's the biggest bug catcher you could ever own anyway.Geesh!
BMIC
'twill be interesting to see how it goes. The last time, I remember thinking that it was no big deal at all compared to what I remembered of the previous one.

But then again, 2 cycles ago I was in Elementary school and played outdoors a lot. Now I'm stuck inside at work alll day and so pooped most evenings I don't get outside much.

I remember collecting the casings as a kid. Thought they were the coolest things. Of course, I spent all my time running around in the woods when I was little. so nothing like that really bothers me much. Can't wait to see my daughter's reaction, poor city girl!
WVDragonlady
They're a pain in the arse! They'll clog up my pool! They're loud and you can't hear the T.V.! They fly right into you! Did I mention that they're a pain in the arse?! UGH! I hate em! mad.gif

I ordered 10 cicada flies last week and they came yesterday. These flies are da bomb. Can't wait to cast them this summer. They have a black foam body some elk hair with some kinda sparkle hackle that gives the wings a translucent look and rubber legs. biggrin.gif

But like you said SMan you can throw anything and hook a fish then. wink.gif

Since fishing has come up in this thread I will post this here enjoy... biggrin.gif

A young guy from Texas moves to California and goes to a big
mega-department store looking for a job.

The manager says, "Do you have any sales experience?"

The kid says, "Yeah, I was a salesman back home in Texas."

Well, the boss liked the kid so he gave him the job. "You can start
tomorrow. I'll come down after we close and see how you did."

His first day on the job was rough, but he got through it. After the
store was locked up, the boss came down.

"How many sales did you make today?" the boss asked.

The kid says, "One."

The boss says, "Just one? Our sales people average 20 to 30 sales a day.
How much was the sale for?"

The kid says, $101,237.64."

The boss says, $101,237.64? What the hell did you sell?"

The kid says, "First I sold him a small fish hook.

Then I sold him a medium fish hook.

Then I sold him a larger fish hook.

Then I sold him a new fishing rod.

Then I asked him where he was going fishing and he said down the coast,
so I told him he was going to need a boat, so we went down to the boat department and I sold him that twin engine Chris Craft.

Then he said he didn't think his Honda Civic would pull it, so I took him down to the automotive department and sold him that 4 x 4 Blazer."

The boss said, "A guy came in here to buy a fish hook and you sold him a boat and truck?"

The kid says, "No, he came in here to buy a box of tampons for his wife and I said, "Well, your weekend's shot -- you might as well go fishing."

ps.to keep on topic I saw on the news the other night that the cicadas larva are digging their way up right now...will be climbing the trees in May and molting...here's more

Mcgee
Put on your ear plugs. According to the U of Md. the noise level of the bugs can reach 80 decibles, that`s the sound level of a turck on the interstate. 65 is considered a safe level of sound. In one acre there can be up to 1 1/2 million of them. Yikes i`m leaving town ah haahaahaa. So much for a quiet summer outside.

Soft-Shelled Cicadas

Serves:4

Ingredients:
60 Freshly emerged 17 year Cicadas

3 cups Flour

Salt and pepper to season

Flour

4 Eggs, beaten

1 cup Corn oil or slightly salted

Butter

Instructions:
The seventeen year cicada is considered a delicacy by nearly every
living creature and when emerging, by the millions, stuff every
animal for miles.
Birds have trouble getting off the ground.
Foxes waddle.
Garter snakes are lumpy.
Dogs and cats curl up and sleep all day.
In former times, the Native Americans found them to be a worthy
addition to their diets when available.
The cicadas emerge at night and hang like snow white Christmas
ornaments from the trees.
As they dry, their color darkens to a black with orange decorative
stripes.
They are at their finest at night when they just emerge and are still
soft.
They make great campfire cooking fare.
For those who are interested, they are kosher! The best way to
prepare them is to dip them, still alive, in beaten egg, roll them in
the seasoned flour and then gently saute them until they are golden
brown.
They have a wonderful rich nutty flavor.
Preparing them is simplicity itself.

Cicada Cuisine

Cicadas are a delicacy in the city of Shanghai, China, where this
creative recipe originated.

Ingredients
Cicadas, anises, salt, rice wine, mashed garlic, celery, turnip
greens.

Recipe
1. Boil the cicadas and anises in salted rice wine for five minutes,
then remove the cicadas.
2. Sauté the mashed garlic, adding water and rice wine to make a
paste.
3. Deep-fry the cicadas, then skewer them with bamboo picks. Arrange
them on a plate with the turnip greens, celery, and garlic paste to
look like the cicadas are climbing out of a mud pie onto green
foliage. Bon appetit!

I would definitely avoid any that have that fungus where their butt falls off.

Then again, there may be one or two folks who should seek them out. tongue.gif

I went in my backyard last night to look for them, but still have yet to see them in Hagerstown. I did see exit holes though. They're ALL OVER in Rockville though. They're smooshed all over the sidewalk where I work. One landed on me today when I was outside - YUCK! They are harmless though. I just don't them using me as a landing pad.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- A man who cooked and ate nearly 30 cicadas sought medical treatment after suffering a strong allergic reaction to the sauteed insects.

The man showed up at a Bloomington clinic Thursday covered from head-to-toe in hives, and sheepishly told a doctor he'd caught and ate the cicadas after sauteing them in butter with crushed garlic and basil.

"He said they didn't taste too bad, but his wife didn't care for the aroma," said Dr. Al Ripani, the doctor who treated the man at Promptcare East.

The man, who has a history of asthma and shellfish allergies, suffered a "significant allergic reaction," after eating the cicadas, Ripani said.

He said he gave the man antihistamines, steroids and a shot of adrenaline, then observed him for two hours before sending him home.

After living underground for 17 years and feeding on tree roots, the so-called Brood X cicadas are emerging by the billions across the Eastern U.S.

Ripani said recent newspaper articles extolling the tastiness of cicada cuisine should have warned people that dining on the bugs can be dangerous for some people.

"Severe food allergies such as this can be fatal," he said. "I feel that needs to be stressed in these articles."

He said the University of Maryland's department of entomology's Cicada-licious cookbook, which includes recipes for Cicada Stir-Fry and Cicada Dumplings, contains a disclaimer urging people to consult a doctor before eating cicadas.

"We ask that you please take special caution if you have other food allergies, such as soy, nuts or shellfish, or if you know of any contact allergies that you may have to other insects," it states.

Who actually eats these things?

There was something in yesterday's Post about school kids bringing them in a jar, then daring each other to eat them. A teacher found a couple of kids puking outside a portable after eating them!

Do they do any damage to trees?

Because of their soda-straw-like mouths, they cannot eat the leaves of your plants.
They will make slits in tree limbs to lay eggs but, shouldn't really damage your trees.
WVU-Mountaineers
Thanks, I was just wondering b/c you hear about how locusts can destroy crops.

locusts can...they are grasshoppers.

Cicadas will damage real small trees.
WVU-Mountaineers
Oh, didn't know that. So many people, including myself, use the word interchangeably.
GreedyXJ
From another post you replied to...

"When some people say “locust,” they mean a cicada. However, when entomologists say “locust,” they mean a grasshopper. An example of this is the locust plagues mentioned in the Bible. When a brood of cicadas emerged a few years after the first white colonists arrived in the New England area, they thought these were the Biblical locusts, and the incorrect name stuck. When botanists say “locust,” they mean a kind of tree."
