You'll hear many things on TV. I actually believe you can hear whatever you want on TV. It's there, someone is saying it.
The spectrum of opinion of the American media is extremely narrow. Notice the question is whether or not we can find weapons of mass destruction, or create an Iraqi democracy. It is never asked though, what right do we have to be over their at all? Is it because they attacked us? No they didn't. No evidence. Is it because they have weapons? Well, first off, we have 30 thousand weapons of mass destruction, and we are worried about them having one. Nuclear weapons technology is extremely easy to detect, and inspections have done a great deal to prevent it's development. But when you are bombing, you can't have weapons inspections. In fact, that was what the US bombing in 1998 was meant to do: undermine the UN inspections. What about chemical and biological weapons? Well those would be impossible to stop. If Iraq has a high-school biology lab, they have the capability of making biological or chemical weapons.
Is it because they attacked his own people? First off, the Kurds are as much Saddamns people as the Native Americans were Andrew Jacksons people. Secondly, our big ally Turkey murders Kurds by the thousands, but we don't see us saying anything about that now do we. Plus, we supported him through his worse atrocities, until he disobeyed us. See, a country to the United States isn't a democracy if it doesn't follow orders. That is our big beef with Cuba. It has nothing to do with democracy, because the tyrants we installed there before Castro were by no means democratic, but because Castro wanted to be independent, and we wouldn't have that. The people of Cuba really liked Castro, because he supported social programs. Sure he's killing people now, but you know I think the United States has killed far more innocent people with the sanctions. I mean, the sanction effectively bar food and medicine!! That is wrong! We did the same to Iraq.
It has to do with allowing United States corporations to rape and pillage the land and their people, and profit from the resources, without the control of the local governments. Same thing in all countries we try to "install democracy in". Is it because they harbor terrorist? What is a terrorist? By definition, the United States is a terrorist state. We instill fear into our enemies to accomplish political objectives, and that is terrorism. We do it all over the world. And Iraq is a small country... we can not possibly get rid of all the terrorists. The 9/11 hijackers were also Saudi, but Saudi Arabia is our big ally, we wouldn't say anything about them now would we? What about giving freedom to the Arabic people? Well how about we start with Saudi Arabia. I mean, there is little more oppressive country in the Middle East then that. But no, bringing up obvious truths, like the fact that we are hypocrites and many of our allies are terrorist states, isn't in the cards.
If you want to get rid of terrorism, first you need to stop training and funding terrorists (that is where our aid in Columbia, Turkey, and Isreal goes to, arms for terrorists), and secondly you need to look at the grievances, and they are pretty obvious. Stop supporting the oppressive occupation of Israel and remove US military bases from Arab holy lands. That is what Osama Bin Laden wanted. Sure, they don't like our freedom. Actually, they don't like us because we PREVENT democracy by installing people like Saddamn Hussien, but that is beside the point. That wasn't the reason why 9/11 happened. You don't commit suicide when you don't like someone. You do however, commit suicide (martyr) when you don't like what someone is doing to you, and otherwise feel helpless to stop it. Resistance against oppression (which is what the Palestinians are doing, and what Osama is doing), is not terrorism. Now of course, we shouldn't go around killing people. The people should be brought to justice, but the reasons for the crimes should be seriously examined, separately from the crimes.
Regime change begins here.
