le]I just wanted to say that I think it's a great idea to enable Mail Call submissions online. I'm surprised it took this long to have that feature on your website. Thanks for making things easier.

I also think it's a great idea so now local people have a place to post the comments on what's going on locally and nationally.

Suggestion: updates on Saturday and Sunday
(I realize you are probably not working those days, Ms. Webmaster. Is there a p/t person that has HTML capabilities? Or maybe build in an auto-post system?)

Anyway you can get the date/time correct on the server that handles these forums?
For instance it is now 5/20 at 8:25 a.m. The posts appear to have the wrong time.

mlt76 - Thanks for noticing! I am going to try to have it done each Saturday and Sunday around Noon. I am not, at this time, under a mandate to publish at all on the weekend, so I kind of fit it in to my schedule and weekends are not predictable for me :-)
Yossarian - I know the time is slightly off and that is one of the things on my "To do" list. I will get to it soon, I promise!

Hey Webmistress!
Suggestion for the forums. First of all I notice we have two World News categories, both dealing with Iraq.
Second, I personally would like to see a Computer/Technology category. Folks could ask questions or discuss computer technology. Other posters could perhaps answer questions or assist those having general problems with Technology. I happen to know that one of the more active posters here works for a well renown information technology department (not me!) and is a leader in his field!
(also, could we get the date/time thing fixed?

Jun 3 2003, 05:28 AM
I agree with Yossarian on all points. We as user's can't create the top level topics so we have to pick one of the existing topics and post under that. I think a technology topic would be great so we could discuss computer hardware and software and give people advice. Please also fix the time!!
Yossarian, You might as well just spelled my name out since it is pretty obvious that I am a techie, but I wouldn't consider myself a leader in the field, I am young and still learning!

I would think that you would consider yourself a techie even though you no longer work in the field.

Also the Sports News area is only setup now to talk about the Suns but there should be seperate areas to talk about Major League Baseball, NFL, NHL, Nascar and even local High School and College Sports.

Actually I have a new suggestion for the Herald Mail website: kill the pop-under ad for subscriptions. Please?
slager
Jun 7 2003, 03:29 AM
I agree, does anybody pay attention to that pop up add anyway? I know the first thing I do is close it when I come to the page or I turn on my pop-up stopper so it doesn't come up to start with.

I think the Martinsburg topic should be expanded to
'Martinsburg/Berkeley County'...
Same for 'CharlesTown/Jefferson County'....
Or, maybe an 'Eastern Panhandle' topic ???

I hope the webmaster checks out our suggestions that has been posted in this thread and acts on them because this board is really starting to slow down.

We need some of those topic categories added so we can post stuff in more appropriate areas like Yossarian said with the computer or technology are or my suggestion about more sports categories.

Thanks! I am feeling a little better every day
Ok, Here is what's done so far:
Merged the two Iraq topics
Renamed Martinsburg and Charles Town Categories to include the county names
Changed permissions for members so you can add new topics to each category. (Let me know if this works properly or not)
Still trying to get the server time adjusted, this is not something I have access to and I am having to rely on someone else to get it done. Sorry it is taking so long
Thanks again and keep sending ideas!

For a new category which will include Technology, I am hoping we can get a few different areas where members can request and receive advice or help. I need help deciding on a name for the category...
Send me some catchy titles... (this should be good, LOL)

Tech Help for Dummies is my suggestion.

I have been thinking (uh oh, look out!) of having a Community section which would include, for example:
Member to Member help sections for things like:
- Computers/Technology
- Automotive Repairs
- Home and Garden Help
- Movie Reviews
- Book Reviews
- Video Game Reviews
- Restaurant Recommendations
We need a cool name for the section, or maybe just a simple one would be better.
Whatcha think?

Jun 15 2003, 02:24 PM
That's a great idea! I am sure we could have a lot of fun with those topics. The sports section needs a topic for the NBA, I am not a basketball fan but I am sure there are people out there that follow it. I am not that great at thinking up catchy titles so hopefully someone will come forward with a good title.
Where are you Yossarian? You're good at this kind of stuff.

Great Idea webmaster!
Now we just have to come up with a good name for it.
The Baltimore Sunpapers uses the name "Open Mike" but I think we need to come up with something better than that!
Maybe something like the "Soapbox" or "Corner Bar" or "Coffee Shop", or "Member to Member", or "Talkabout".
I'll think about it (unless someone else comes up with a name in the meantime).
My home PC crashed over the weekend so I'll be limited in my posting here for the next week until the new hard drive comes and I can get everything loaded back up.
WVDragonlady
Jun 16 2003, 01:28 PM
How about the" Back Page"?Or "In Other Words"(or should that be worlds for some of us?)
Home and Garden could be "Fence Talk"
Resturant Reconmendations could be "Good Eats"
Movie reveiws-"Blank Screen(s)"
Auto Repairs-"Start Your Engine(s)"
Book Reveiws-"Turn the Page"
I'm having trouble with the video games name.I'm not a real big player.
I'll keep thinkin.(that sounded like a threat)

Not yet Slager. I deleted Windows and then tried to reformat the hard drive. The reformat didn't work, apparently there are lots of bad sectors and format can't recover them. So I was messing around and re-loaded windows. I installed the video card drivers and the NIC card drivers to see if that would work temporarily. Well it did. I didn't reload ZoneAlarm or Norton so I'm kinda cruising the 'net naked! It's a temporary thing just to get me back on the 'net till the new hard drive comes.

What about a community calendar, where people could post their fire hall bbq, or church basket bingo, or other events? No offense, but the little Upcoming Events thing at the bottom of the page is pretty useless. There's never anything on it.
