"Sunday was a pretty nice day. I took my dog down below Sharpsburg hunting mushrooms. He's a good dog. I got him at the SPCA. I call him a him but he's really a she and I call him Jake but he doesn't know the difference. If you get one, don't get too big a dog. It shouldn't weigh too much, about 20 or 25 pounds. And if you can find one with some white on its nose like a pig nose, they make the best mushroom hunting dogs. Don't get one with a black nose. They're not too good. We found our share. Well, he found most of them, I just picked them."

I didn't realize it was even on, until about 5 minutes before it started! AMC usually repeats a lot of their movies, so it'll probably be on again.
Just checked AMC's website: Fire up the TIVO or VCR for 4/22 at 1:15am or 4/22 at 5:30pm. Channel 40 on Antietam Cable.

By the way, where's the SPCA? I didn't know they ran a pet shelter in the Tri-State area!

It's on Marshall St/Maugansville Rd. Heading out from the city go past the Western Heights Middle School, past Potomac Center. Cross under the I81 overpass and it's on the right side. If you're coming from the north get off I81 at Maugansville Rd, turn left at the exit and it's immediately on the right.

Ya know, maybe I'm all wrong about this. Maybe I am confusing the Washington County Humane Society with the SPCA. I kinda thought they were one and the same.
Well, I just checked, it's listed in the Verizon government pages as SPCA, 13011 Maugansville Rd. Their web site,
http://www.hswc-md.org/, directs to a notice that the domain name was just registered. The original site (before redirection) lists The Humane Society of Washington County. It was apparently originally hosted by Intrepid as washspca.
Now I'm REALLY confused.

I was right. The shelter is currently operated by the Humane Society of Washington County. Local SPCAs do run some shelters elsewhere in the state, but not any in this area. I found the web site for it via a link from the ASPCA web site to a search on another web site.

I thought the person who called in yesterday (5/19) and today (5/20) to remind us not to buy gas on May 19th was pretty funny.
I'm already in Frederick on 5/19 when I see them pleading with me to not to buy gas today. I've got less than a quarter tank, and I've got 70 miles to get home. Does that person think I didn't buy gas yesterday? And to be reminded not to buy gas on 5/19 on 5/20 was equally funny
And besides, do they really think that not buying gas on a particular day when you're going to have to buy it the next day or not get to work is really going to make a difference?

From 5/28/04 mail call:
"I think the Maryland State Police is putting too emphasis on seat belts and not other crimes. I am a senior and I was caught in Cearfoss a few months ago for not wearing my seat belt. There were two state troopers sitting there watching me with no seat belt. You mean to tell me that this is all they have to do. Since then, there has been two robberies there at Your Country Store in Cearfoss and they are both unsolved. So they should be looking for the robbers, not seniors with no seat belts."

Yeah, 5/28's Mail Call is a goldmine. Here's another:
"I'd really like to know why the Sheriff's Department is wasting time investigating a murder case from 1905. It's very unlikely that anyone involved in that case is alive today. Why doesn't the sheriff's department worry more about murder cases and crimes that happen today instead of 100 years ago?"
The article, if I remember correctly, was about a Sheriff's Department deputy who has been studying the case for informational reasons and as a hobby, not an active investigation.
There are a couple of other goodies in 5/28 as well.

From the 6/10 edition of "Mail Call"
QUOTE
"To the person who thinks our country was founded by keeping politics and religion separate. Man, you must not have been paying attention in history class. The people came here, the first thing they did in 1607 was plant a cross on the sands in Virginia and dedicate this country to God. How many times in the constitution and the Bill of Rights is the Creator mentioned. Come on, guys, you know darn well that this separation of church discussion has no business being in public discussion. It's a lie from the word go and you know it."

Ding ding ding! 10 points to Tom!
That's correct. God is (properly) mentioned and invoked multiple times in the
Declaration of Independance. Where we set ourselves apart from other nations by our devotion to and dependance upon God and Christian beliefs. God and Christianity have more to do with our nation's basic characteristics: her foundation. We invoke God's authority to support our nations formation as distinct and separate from all other nations.
The Constitution and Bill of Rights establish our system of government which, though based in large part on Judeo-Christian ethics, need not invoke God's name to establish its authority. The Declaration of Independance defined our nation, while the Constitution etc. gets into the nitty-gritty details of how her affairs are to be ordered. The ordering of her affairs is naturally influenced by her basic (Christian) foundational ethics, but the blueprint for her government need make no mention of the Creator upon whose authority the nation is founded

Did you see the one today where some guy thinks that Ronald Reagan's death is just a diversionary tactic to keep us from paying attention to what the Shrub is doing?
I don't care for the Shrub is doing any more than that person, but Ronald Reagan was our president, he was a good president, and the last years of his life were more challenging than anything he ever did as president. I believe that deserves our respect.
But now he's buried, and I'm sure the news will move on to another subject. And if it doesn't, there are a lot of other stations to watch, or they can even (gasp!) turn off the stupid boob tube and do something constructive like read a book or sit outside and enjoy the summer weather. That person was just a bit too focused, I think - get a life!

Most cats flip out and scratch the hell out of anything when they get near water. Wear kevlar if you plan on giving a cat a bath. Actually cat hair gets embedded into upholstery somehow and can be difficult to get out. Sometimes the tape rollers just don't grab all the hair. I use a rubber brush and brute force. It smears the hairs together into wads that are easier to pick up.
