Doom 3 has gone gold. Release date is Aug. 3, in retail stores on Aug 5. The screen shots look fantastic.

Incredible screenshots, but few of us will have the muscle to run it like that. Unless you're willing to cough up $400+ for a new video card. Here's the specs:

From September's PC Gamer issue, they have the system requirements as:Minimum:
P4 1.5Ghz CPU (or equivalent).
384MB of RAM.
64MB graphics card.

Lowest supported GPU is a Geforce 4 MX (worse than Geforce 3).
Supported cards:
GF 4 MX.
GF 3.
GF 4.
GF FX (and higher).
Radeon 8500s, 9000s and higher.

They themselves recommend:
2Ghz CPU.
512MB RAM.
Radeon 9800.
5-channel sound card and speakers.

I'll probably get the Xbox version.

Thanks SMan. I was looking for the specs last night and couldn't find them. I knew my 4 yr old 933mhz PC would never be able to handle it.

I'm sure in order to run it at any where near high end resolution you'd probably at least need a 2.8Ghz with a ton of ram and the very latest NVidia graphics card. I've got my eye on a couple systems from Alienware, Dell and Velocity Micro but at a minimum of $3,000, I guess it'll wait.

The game looks great. I'm not sure if I like the thought of the game moving away from it's first person point of view. It almost brings it into the realm of some of the other games that are out there now. Half-Life is an example.

I'm with Yos as well. I won't have the power for this monster.

I can run it (2.0 P4, 512MB, ATI 9600 card), just not like those awesome screens. There's just not enough PC gaming goodness coming out anymore for me to justify another upgrade. I'll take the graphics hit and get the Xbox version for the stability and ease of just popping the disk in and turning on the TV to play.

I see that they're making an XBox version of the game; any word on a PS2 version?
SMan
No word on PS2 version yet and the xbox version got pushed into 2005. Damn those screenshots! I may have to give in and buy a new video card.

Hey Yoss (or any other gamers) - did you get Doom 3 yet?

I was going to wait for the xbox version, but I couldn't stand the wait after hearing so many good things about it the last couple of days. I just got back from buying it. Time to load it up.
Yossarian
naw, I can't run it on my machine. But I did get an email from amazon.com saying they'd be more than willing to take my money for it.

Let us know how it is.

I just may buy it! No problems here - I got a brand new PC a few months ago... 3.2 GHz and gobs of everything.

After a few hours of playing, my initial impression is that it's a beautiful looking game, but nothing ground breaking in the way of gameplay. The atmosphere created by the game is about as close to being "scary" as I've ever experienced in a video game. Very creepy stuff.

I actually spazzed out and ran to Staples the other day to pick up another 512MB stick of RAM in a last ditch attempt at getting the game to run at 1024x768 resolution. Oh well, you can never have too much RAM.

In a nutshell, it's a good game that you should pick up when you eventually upgrade your system in the future. But it's not worth going crazy and getting a new rig just for the game.
