Since this thread's been revived a bit, I thought I'd share some more of my work-at-home story.
A year ago I quit my telecommute job. Friends/family told me that I was crazy... it was a good job with plenty of perks. But I hated the hassle of meeting weekly deadlines, I couldn't stand the stress, and I was never very good at working for "the man" anyway.
Since that time, my earnings have been entirely based on freelance writing. So anyone with some decent writing skills may want to check it out. I mostly write for magazines--have written for "Hagerstown Magazine," actually--but I do some online writing, too.
If you're a newbie to writing, I recommend Associated Content. They will pay for some articles--assuming the topics aren't old has-been stuff--plus they pay a bonus based on page views. (I've written so much for them that I automatically get $30-$40 a month for all the old stuff I've written... no new work required.) They only pay about $3-$6 an article, but it can add up fast if you're prolific. Visit them
here.
If you have a bit of writing experience--or you're pretty good at it and don't need to start as a beginner--try looking for gigs at
FreelanceWritingGigs.com. She does an initial glance at job ads for writers, so you're less likely to get scammed (although it can happen, so be wary). I've never been scammed yet on a writing job, but there have been times that I've had to do a lot of follow-up to get paid (the worst part of working on your own).
I've also heard of people making money blogging, if that's something that interests you. I have a blog, but it only makes me about $100 every 6 months. Barely pays for itself. I'll probably shut it down soon. However, there are people who actually get paid to blog. You can find jobs like this at
ProBlogger.
Hope that helps someone!
