I followed up on the topic of recycling after someone posted on this board. I gave away several items that I couldn't use, but were too good to throw away.

However, typical of Washington County, there are more people on the board asking for giveaways than people seeking to give away items that are still useable.

I gave away some things that were still good that some people appreciated having. And it didn't have to go to the landfill.

However, almost everyome on the board from Hagerstown is asking for giveaways.

Val I know where you're comin' from.Looks like it's bulk trash pickup in Fredneck this week.I saw huge piles of stuff on the curbs coming into work today.I was looking at some of it and saying to myself...hmmm looks pretty good I wonder if I just started loading some of the stuff would anyone care?

I have about 200 pop cans that I have saved up. I will be taking these bad boys back to Michigan with me on my next trip up and cash them in. 10 cents per can will come out to what about 20 bucks? That will at least pay for my gas up there.

Anywho, I have given away alot of stuff from my home since I have moved in. Garden lights I pulled because there were to many and they looked tacky. A chandelier (sp?) I took down and replaced with a better one. Also gave away flood lights I bought a K-mart and couldn't return.

I hate to see people trash somewhat good items that other people can use or fix up. Usually when I can't give something away or sell it at a yard sale I take it to goodwill and they decide weather it is trash or good to sell back to the community.

I personally think it's lack of awareness that keeps people from donating there goods to worthy causes. If people donated a lot more of their stuff to local folks or charities, there will be less charities asking for hand outs.

Scounting Out the Trash

Actually that's a pretty common activity in some large cities. After I graduated, I left West Philadelphia to move downtown to Center City to work. Center City has some pretty expensive areas (Rittenhouse Square, Delancey Street, etc.) and those people used to throw out some pretty amazing stuff. Every Monday night there were a lot of people out there checking out the old oriental rugs and other neat stuff stuff that they put out. I've read that they do it in New York also.

The Freecycle network is pretty useful, and I am emptying out a storage room of things that I just don't use anymore, but shouldn't be sent to the landfill. No patience here to advertise it to sell; just take it away. But I am a little freaked out at the Hagerstown people who just discovered it and are sending in wish lists - baby furniture, sewing machines, you name it. I expect them to start asking for cars soon. However, I've met some nice people, who are helping me to simplify my life and want to use things that have been taking up space here.

The Freecycle network...

Please forgive me for having "missed the boat". Where and how do I find out more about this?

Wow:

I just gave away a humoungous exercise bicycle that probably would hurt a woman of under five feet if it fell on her. I promised my family that I would do this.

This woman was so happy I couldn't believe it. She was also very tall. What a fun experience. So nice to talk to someone so happy.
