Korczak Ziolkowski

The Crazy Horse Memorial monument in South Dakota was designed by West Hartford native Korczak Ziolkowski. Ziolkowski was born in Boston in 1908 and moved to West Hartford in his 20s to work as a sculptor. By 1939 Ziolkowsk was in South Dakota working with Gutzon Borglum in carving the Mt. Rushmore Memorial. The Crazy Horse Memorial has been considered in progress since Ziolkowsk started it in 1948. The sculpture was commissioned by Lakota elder Henry Standing Bear
