European E. coli outbreak caused by toxic new strain

An unusually virulent strain of <a class="taxInlineTagLink" id="HEDAI000000107" title="E. coli Infection" href="/topic/health/diseases-illnesses/e.-coli-infection-HEDAI000000107.topic">E. coli</a> is causing a deadly outbreak of food-borne illness in Europe. The bacterium appears to be a previously unknown strain,  global health officials said June 2. The new strain has sickened more than 1,800 people.
