The Hagerstown Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) has awarded 19 scholarships to Washington County students for the 2007-08 school year.

The students who graduated from area high schools in 2007 include Brittany Eberly of Heritage Academy, who will attend Hagerstown Community College; Jena Mannick of South Hagerstown High School, attending the University of Charleston (S.C.); and Shelby Ranalli, Boonsboro High, attending Shenandoah (Va.) University. Also, from Clear Spring High School, Erica Hernandez, attending Penn State University; and Rebecca Slate, attending Frostburg State University (Md.); from North Hagerstown High School, Mary Kavanagh, attending George Mason University; Deanna Mackay, attending Virginia Commonwealth University; and Cara Martin and Elizabeth Sager, both attending the University of Maryland, College Park. Another first-time AAUW scholarship recipient is Erika Osborne, a 2004 graduate of Clear Spring High, who is a senior at Shepherd University.

Past recipients whose scholarships will continue include Jonathan Beattie and Wayne Keefer, both attending Frostburg State University; Karen Gehr, James Madison University (Va.); Sherri Bryan, Hagerstown Community College; Melissa Ankeney and Kevin Motz, both at Villa Julie College (Md.); Krysten Mesner, University of Maryland, College Park; Laura Forsythe, Messiah College (Grantham, Pa.); and Hannah Smith, Virginia Tech.

The AAUW scholarships are provided by funds raised at the organization's two annual used book sales. The next sale will be held Oct. 18-20 at the E.J. Fennel, 324 E. Antietam St., Hagerstown.

Nicholas Segal of Middletown, Md. was named to the dean's list for the spring 2007 semester at the University of Vermont, Burlington, Vt. Segal's major is wildlife and fisheries/biology.

Rebecca Leigh Gisriel of Williamsport was named to the dean's list of distinguished students for the spring 2007 semester at Roanoke College, Salem, Va. Gisriel is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Austin E. Gisriel.

Amber Dawn Moats of Hancock was named to the faculty's list of honorable mention for the spring 2007 semester at Roanoke College. Moats is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul J. Moats Jr.

Ryan Michael Flurie graduated from Salisbury University, Salisbury, Md., May 24, with a bachelor's degree from the Perdue School of Business, majoring in marketing and minoring in finance.

Flurie earned varsity letters for four years in soccer and made the Capital Athletic Conference Academic team for three years. He was also a member of the Financial Management Association, and was a student-athlete tour guide for the university.

He has accepted a job with M&T Bank, in the business banking department in the Western Maryland region.

Cadet 1st Class Jeffrey Dixon of Frederick, Md., graduated from the Massachusetts Maritime Academy on June 16, with a Bachelor of Science degree in marine transportation.

The following local students received degrees from Emory College at Emory University, Atlanta, Ga. on May 14:

Michael Handler of Hagerstown, son of David L. Handler and Robin J. Handler, received a Master of Arts degree.

Heather Bossong of Frederick, Md., daughter of Francis George Bossong IV and Sherry Lee Frost, received a Bachelor of Arts degree.

Amy Franciscovich of Frederick, daughter of Robert John Franciscovich and Cheryl Ann Linscott, received a Bachelor of Science degree.

Laura Eskander of Frederick, daughter of Dr. Elhamy Daoud Eskander and Dr. Hoda Fouad Gabriel, received a Bachelor of Science degree.

Brian Patrick Downey, son of Tom and Suzanne Downey of Smithsburg, graduated cum laude from the University of Maryland, College Park, Md., with a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering.

While at Maryland, Downey received a Citation in University Honors, and was a member of both Tau Beta Pi (engineering) and Pi Tau Sigma (mechanical engineering) honor societies.

Downey also participated in the Gemstone Program, where he worked on a four-year multidisciplinary team research project. His BurniNATION team was first runner-up in the outstanding Gemstone Team Thesis category for their research entitled "Assessing the Impact of Materials on the Fire Hazard in Campus Residences".

Downey is pursuing a Master of Science degree in fire protection engineering at the University of Maryland, College Park.

Leslie E. Spielman of Hagerstown graduated from Saint Francis University, Loretto, Pa., with a Master of Occupational Therapy degree.

Hagerstown residents and eighth-graders Arturo Fuster, E. Russell Hicks Middle School; Joshua Mendez-Santos, Northern Middle School; Katina Greene, Western Heights Middle School; and Chelsey Baturin, a ninth-grade student at Williamsport High School, were recently accepted into the Regional Math/Science Center, an Upward Bound program based at Frostburg State University, Frostburg, Md.

Fuster, Mendez-Santos and Greene will stay on the Frostburg State University (FSU) campus for three weeks this summer, while Baturin will stay for six weeks. They will be developing skills needed for entering and succeeding in post-secondary education; primarily in the fields of math and science. They will live and work with a diverse group of students from West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Maryland to complete a scientific investigation. In addition to the science project, students remain busy with a rigorous academic schedule including math, writing, Latin, literature and SAT preparation classes. They also have the opportunity to attend educational workshops and meet professional scientists and mathematicians to learn what it takes to accomplish individual career goals. Field trips are scheduled on the weekends to reward the students with enriching cultural experiences.

Throughout the academic year, RMSC staff provides participants with support and assistance as they prepare for college.

Students remain in the program until they graduate from high school, returning each summer to FSU. The Regional Math/Science Center programs are completely free to all participants.

Phillip George of Frederick received a Bachelor of Science degree in animal and poultry sciences from the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.

Craig Isenbart of Ijamsville, Md., received a Bachelor of Science in Industrial and Systems Engineering degreefrom the College of Engineering.

Thomas Piontek of Ijamsville received a Bachelor of Science in Business degree (summa cum laude) in finance from the Pamplin College of Business.

Justin Masser of Sabillasville, Md., received a Bachelor of Science in Mining Engineering degree from the College of Engineering.

Jonathan Frey of Thurmont, Md. received a Bachelor of Science degree in wood science and forest products from the College of Natural Resources.

The National Society of High School Scholars announced that Berkeley Springs High School student Thomas Price from Hedgesville, W.Va., has been selected for membership. The society recognizes the top scholars in the nation and invites only those students who have achieved superior academic excellence. The announcement was made by HSHSS Founder and Chairman Claes Nobel, a senior member of the Swedish Nobel family.

Membership in NSHSS entitles qualified students to enjoy a wide variety of benefits, including scholarship opportunities, academic competitions, free events, member-only resources, publications, participation in programs offered by educational partners, online forums, personalized recognition items and publicity honors.
