Jerry Buss purchased the Lakers in 1979, and under his esteemed ownership they have won 10 NBA championships with such players as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Magic Johnson, James Worthy, Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant.

Before becoming involved with the Lakers and other sports franchises, Buss pursued a career in academia. By age 24, he had earned a master's and doctorate in physical chemistry from USC.

Buss was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame on April 5, 2010.
