¿Bluesman on Stage,¿ top, by Frederick, Md.-based artist Kate Fortin, was selected as the artwork for this year¿s Western Maryland Blues Fest. (May 30, 2012) |
When it comes to her work, Fortin said she prefers to work with acrylic on canvas.
"It dries quickly and I like to work quickly," she said. "It gives me the freedom to go over things. Watercolors aren't forgiving but acrylics definitely are. I don't like oil because it takes so long to dry."
Fortin said she was told in December 2011 that she was the Blues Fest artist and said she was "super excited" that she had won.
This year Fortin will attend some of the concerts at the Blues Fest and is looking forward to listening to the bands. She already had a sample of the event when she attended Cabin Fever in early spring, saying "it was fun."
She said when people see her piece she wants them to think of the music.
"I just want them to feel how blues makes people feel — just overall being comforted by music," she said.
