It's an evening of fun, fitness and fundraising.
The Zumbathon charity event will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday, June 12, at Municipal Stadium. Event coordinator and local Zumba instructor Liliana Robeson said all proceeds from the event will benefit St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, which provides treatment for children with catastrophic diseases and conducts research to cure and prevent diseases.
Admission is a minimum donation of $10, and all food sales will also benefit St. Jude.
Robeson she had considered a number of charity organizations and chose to support St. Jude because she loves children.
"Just thinking about what these families have to go through with their children made me willing to be part of this beautiful cause," she said.
Robeson said she combined the fundraising efforts with Zumba because she wanted to give people an authentic Zumba experience. The event will be an opportunity for people to try Zumba in an informal atmosphere.
"This is not like a Zumba class, this is a Zumba party, like a festival," said Robeson.
The event is open to people of all ages.
She explained that Zumba is a Latin-based workout that was invented by a Colombian and it has spread out fast in the United States.
According to Zumba.com, Zumba Fitness was founded in 2001 and the dance-based fitness program now has more than 12 million participants in 125 countries.
A Colombian native herself, Robeson said she hopes to share the culture that influenced the Zumba workout. To Robeson, a certified Zumba instructor, Zumba is more than the latest workout routine. It is a way of life.
"I've been doing Zumba forever, because in my country it is exactly what we do on the weekends in the clubs, but not in high heels," she said.
"I wanted to create a Zumbathon for people to learn more about Zumba," Robeson said, adding that she feels that Zumba in America frequently loses its Latin flair.
"Most instructors in the area use hip-hop, not Latin music like salsa or merengue. (Zumba) is not hip-hop. It is Latin music."
Music at the upcoming Zumbathon will be provided by the band Pablo Antonio y La Firma.
"I know they play the right music. They play what Zumba is supposed to be," Robeson said, "They play annually at The White House, so they are very good."
Robeson said participants will have the opportunity to participate in several variations of Zumba during the event, such as Zumba Gold and Zumba Toning. Although the event will be focused on Zumba, there will also be demonstrations of other Latin dance styles.
Robeson said several area Zumba instructors will be present, as well as guest instructor Marilin Karz from Montgomery County, Md.
