Today is the deadline for South Dakota residents to register to vote and still be eligible for the Nov. 6 general election.
Voter registration is offered at county auditor's offices; city finance offices; driver's license stations; public assistance agencies that provide food stamps or administer Women, Infants and Children and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families programs; military recruitment offices and Department of Human Services offices that provide assistance to the disabled. Most such offices are open until 5 this evening.
To be eligible to register to vote in South Dakota, people must be United States citizens, reside in South Dakota, be at least 18 years old on Election Day, not be serving a felony sentence involving a prison term even if the time is suspended and not be judged mentally incompetent by a judge.
People who register to vote should have a valid photo identification card. For more information about registering to vote, visit the secretary of state's website at sdsos.gov.
Residents in North Dakota are not required to register to vote.
