The Anchorage School District Superintendent James Browder has been named a Supt. finalist for the Des Moines Public Schools, a day after ASD said Browder may soon leave his post due to family medical issues.

The Des Moines School Board made the announcement Saturday and said Browder has been invited to a public reception on Wednesday, March 6.

In a Friday email to his staff, Browder said one of his daughters and young grandson were “experiencing some very severe medical issues” for the past several months in Georgia.

Browder said in his email “As I consider other options moving forward, nothing is official and until then I remain committed to ASD as your superintendent.”

The ASD board also said Friday that Browder and the board were working together on a timeline for succession and Browder will stay on until a new appointment is announced.

The Des Moines Public Schools is Iowa’s largest provider of public schools with more than 30,000 students and nearly 5,000 teachers and staff, according to its website.

The two other finalists in the Des Moines superintendent search include Chief Academic Officer Carey Wright, of Washington D.C., and Thomas Ahart, of Des Moines, who has served as the interim Supt. since May, 2012.

Browder accepted the Anchorage position last summer and began in July 2012, following the retirement of longtime Supt. Carol Comeau.

In January, Browder unveiled his 2013-2014 budget plan that included cutting 215 positions and spending by $25 million. The ASD board took public comments in February over the proposed budget.
