Several children made up a story that led Hagerstown Police and a Maryland State Police helicopter on a wild goose chase Monday evening, according to police.
The children told officers they were playing in a wooded area behind Little Elliott Drive at about 7:30 p.m., when a man tried to abduct one of them at gunpoint, according to a Hagerstown Police Department news release.
Officers said that while they searched the area, they discovered that a 12-year-old boy who had been playing with the children was missing.
Police called for the helicopter and later found the boy at a friend’s house, the release said.
Officers said the children confessed they made up the story about the man with the gun.
