The eastbound lanes of Dual Highway near Eastern Boulevard were closed for almost two hours Friday afternoon while rescue workers responded to an AmeriGas truck that was leaking propane in the parking lot of a strip mall.
The propane leak was reported shortly before 2 p.m. in the parking lot of the Always Building at 1201 Dual Highway, which is just east of Eastern Boulevard.
Fire Marshal Doug DeHaven said the roadway was re-opened to traffic at 3:30 p.m.
DeHaven said employees of businesses in the strip mall, which included a Subway restaurant and a Boost Mobile shop, were evacuated in case the truck exploded.
Officials chose not to evacuate guests from two nearby hotels.
Earlier in the operation, DeHaven said he anticipated the roadway would be closed for several hours, but a mixture of low temperatures and moisture in the air helped seal the leak. As a result, DeHaven said, officials felt comfortable to let a driver return the small-tanker truck to the AmeriGas facility on Leitersburg Pike.
“It will be repaired there,” DeHaven said.
Traffic was backed up in the eastbound lanes of Dual Highway and intersecting streets in the immediate area for almost 90 minutes.
A HazMat vehicle, several fire trucks and Hagerstown police responded to the scene.
