A fire that started in the basement of a home early Saturday morning at 12002 Greendale Drive near Hagerstown caused an estimated $50,000 in damages, the Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office said.
The fire was discovered by the owner of the home at 5:48 a.m., according to a fire marshal’s office news release.
Smoke detectors were present but not working, the release said.
It took about 40 firefighters from Hagerstown, Funkstown, Smithsburg, Longmeadow and Washington County about 30 minutes to get the blaze under control.
Damages were estimated at $45,000 to the structure and $5,000 to the contents, the fire marshal’s office said.
The cause of the fire remained under investigation.
