A teenager accused of shooting another male Monday afternoon in downtown Hagerstown was still at large Tuesday, according to city police.

The youth, Dennis Marshall Jr., 16, of Hagerstown was charged in an armed robbery earlier this year, but those charges were eventually dropped, according to court records.

City police issued a warrant Monday night for Marshall's arrest as an adult on charges of attempted murder, first- and second-degree assault and reckless endangerment.

Marshall was charged as an adult in February with armed robbery and other offenses in a holdup at Nadia's Convenience Store in Hagerstown. Marshall's case was transferred to juvenile court, and a judge ruled in July there was insufficient evidence that Marshall was involved in the crime.

Another teenager, Eric Shaquille Baymon of Hagerstown, also was charged as an adult in the robbery and entered an Alford plea to second-degree assault and was placed on probation, according to court records.

Detective Chris Kayser said Tuesday morning that the victim in the shooting was in critical condition Monday night, but no update on his condition was available. The name or age of the male have not been released, Kayser said.

Detective Jim Hurd said Monday that the male was taken to Meritus Medical Center, where he underwent surgery. The male was reportedly shot once in the stomach near the intersection of Jonathan Street and Wellers Alley at about 3:30 p.m., police said.

There were at least two witnesses to the shooting, which occurred when a male approached the victim and pulled a semiautomatic weapon from his waistband, police said. There was apparently a dispute between the shooter and victim before Monday, Hurd said.

Police released a photograph of Marshall, but it is not current. Marshall is now wearing his hair in short cornrows, police said.

Marshall is black, 5 feet 8 inches tall and 140 pounds. He was last seen wearing dark pants and a black hoodie with white lettering on the front.
