Police warn of scam
MARTINSBURG, W.Va. — West Virginia State Police are warning area residents of an extortion scam that generated multiple complaints from people on Saturday.
People reported getting calls on their cellphones from a Hispanic male who said he was holding a person’s son or brother hostage and would hand over the loved one in exchange for $1,000, state police said.
In other cases, the caller would tell a person that a loved one was involved in an accident and that the injured person needed money to help cover expenses, state police said.
People who were called were told to either wire money through Western Union or purchase a prepaid credit card and mail it to an address, state police said.
State police, along with federal officials, are investigating.
State police urged people to be careful about requests to wire money or send pre-paid credit cards.
Anyone who feels that they have been victim of a similar crime should contact police, state police said.
