A winter weather advisory was in effect for Western Maryland and eastern West Virginia from midnight Friday through 7 p.m. Saturday, according to the National Weather Service.
Starting late Friday night, snow accumulations were expected to be about 1 to 3 inches in those areas, the weather service said.
The Maryland State Highway Administration was preparing for the storm, which is forecast to bring anything from rain, a wintry mix or all snow, according to a SHA news release.
SHA officials were taking the necessary preparations to ensure state roadways remain safe throughout the storm, the release said.
“Yet again, Maryland is divided by the rain/snow scenario this weekend, and SHA will respond accordingly,” SHA Administrator Melinda Peters said in the release. “Crews are poised to respond to whatever precipitation falls. Motorists should again have alternate plans Saturday if the storm brings snow accumulation.”
SHA officials remind motorists to never pass a snow plow or plow train.
Temperatures are expected to be in the lower to mid 30s overnight Friday into today, with 5 to 10 mph winds out of the west changing to 15 to 25 mph out of the northwest, the weather service said. Gusts up to 40 mph are expected during the day.
The weather service is calling for Sunday to be mostly sunny and breezy, with a high of 31 degrees.
The combination of cold air and gusty winds may cause wind chills to drop below zero in higher elevations tonight into Sunday morning.
