Steffey & Findlay usually sells sandbags for use in mortar for the bricks it also sells, but on Monday it was selling them for reasons related to Hurricane Sandy, said Phil Adams, president of the company.

“We normally sell sandbags for building material purposes,” said Adams. “Today we’re selling them in order to help with flood control.”

Customers who want sandbags to keep their homes or workplaces from flooding can purchase them from Steffey & Findlay, at 177 S. Burhans Blvd.

The sandbags, according to Adams, are an effective way to prevent water from getting inside buildings.

“It’s like a dam,” he said. “We sell the sand in poly woven bags, which don’t slide as easily, or plastic bags, which are stronger.”

Customers can purchase loose sand and bag it themselves, Adams said.

By 4:30 p.m. Monday, about 225 bags of sand had already been sold, according to Adams. Nearly 300 sandbags had been made.

“We have plenty of sand so we can bag as we go,” Adams said.

Each sandbag, whether in a poly woven bag or a plastic bag, cost $7.25, according to Adams.
