A serial rapist with convictions in Montgomery County, Md., and Franklin County, Pa., has been indicted by a grand jury in a sexual assault committed 13 years ago in Washington County.
Pov Srun, 40, formerly of Hagerstown, was indicted Friday on charges of first- and second-degree rape, first- and second-degree sex offenses, kidnapping, unlawful restraint and second-degree assault, Washington County Circuit Court records show.
The indictment filed with Washington County Circuit Court stated that Srun is charged with raping a woman on Dec. 8, 1998. Assistant State’s Attorney Gina Cirincion said Tuesday the assault occurred in the Smithsburg area.
Srun was connected to the 1998 assault as a result of his DNA matching DNA found on the clothing of the woman, Cirincion said. Srun’s DNA profile was included in the Combined DNA Index System database, she said.
The woman was abducted from her home as she was preparing to leave for work by a man who was hiding in her vehicle, Cirincion said. The woman was forced at knifepoint to drive to a ball field, where she was sexually assaulted, Cirincion said.
Srun is serving a 35-year sentence in a state prison in Jessup, Md., for 2006 convictions of second-degree rape and first-degree sexual offense. In 2007, a Pennsylvania jury convicted him of raping two women in 2004 and he was sentenced to 34 1/2 to 170 years to be served consecutively to his time in Maryland.
In those cases, Srun was accused of forcing women into their own vehicles at a shopping center, driving them to remote locations, sexually assaulting them and returning them to the point where they were kidnapped. The rapes in Pennsylvania began in shopping centers in Waynesboro and Chambersburg.
The Maryland cases occurred in early 2005 and involved a woman kidnapped from a school parking lot and a teenager attacked in a shopping center parking lot.
A witness saw a man get into a minivan after the teenager was assaulted and gave police the license plate number, according to documents.
An off-duty Montgomery County police officer spotted the van, followed it to Hagerstown and called a police dispatcher for assistance. Srun was stopped and taken into custody near his home.
