Hagerstown could see between one and three inches of snow Friday afternoon and Friday night, according to HMTV 6 meteorologist Brittany Beggs.
“All the models are showing it (falling) between 3 p.m. and 10 p.m.,” said Beggs, adding that accumulations could be greater in points west like Garrett County, Md.
The chance for precipitation is 90 percent, according to the National Weather Service.
Washington County and neighboring counties to the east, west and south are under a winter weather advisory through 7 p.m. Friday, the weather service said Friday morning.
A light snow that fell across the region Thursday morning delayed school openings, made roads slick and was being blamed for traffic accidents across the area.
One northbound lane of traffic on I-81 was closed to traffic because of an accident at the 2-mile marker near Williamsport, a Washington County Emergency Services supervisor said.
That was one of a number of traffic accidents reported during morning rush hour in Washington County, the supervisor said.
She said a majority of the accidents involved vehicles sliding off the roadway because of icy conditions — particularly on Interstates 70 and 81.
The snow emergency plan went into effect in Washington County at 5:30 a.m. Thursday “because of hazardous driving conditions, caused by snow or ice covered roads,” Maryland State Police said in a news release. The plan was lifted at 11 a.m. on select roads — I-70, I-68, I-81 and Md. 340.
Washington County Public Schools were operating on a two-hour delay. Berkeley, Morgan and Jefferson counties in West Virginia started out on two-hour delays, but all three announced before 8 a.m. that schools would be closed for the day.
A number of other area schools, including private schools, were on two-hour delays.
Washington County Highway Department Director Ed Plank said county road crews were deployed to treat roads between 2:30 and 3 a.m. Thursday.
Saturday’s forecast calls for mostly sunny conditions with a high near 30 and the mercury is expected to dip to around 16 degrees Saturday night, according to the National Weather Service.
Sunday is expected to be sunny with a high near 33.
