When Heritage Academy began a live broadcast of the morning announcements last year, students had the opportunity not only to learn communication skills, but to develop leadership abilities.
The TV lab was the idea of D. Hunter Powell, Heritage principal, and was assembled under the direction of Pastor Allen Robinson, the IT coordinator at Heritage.
In the beginning of the program, students already involved in the school’s print journalism class were selected to help in the lab.
Audra Haddock-Martenot, a digital photography instructor at Hagerstown Community College who has children at Heritage Academy, offered suggestions during the early stages of the program, which is under the direction of journalism teacher Tammy Brewer.
With the beginning of the 2012-13 school year, the television lab is being run completely by students with minimal supervision by Powell and Brewer.
Senior Ben Cosner, who worked in the lab last year, is in charge of the production. During the spring, Cosner and classmate Jonathon Kriner were responsible for training students to work in the lab this year.
Senior class members take turns leading pledges, prayer, and announcements.
Members of the junior class are responsible for filming and directing.
Each morning, an elementary student helps with the pledges and the weather report.
The TV lab began with donated items.
As other equipment or funds are donated for this project, Powell would like to see improvements made that would allow the students to expand the production.
