IMPERIAL — For many of the officers of the Imperial High School FFA chapter, the arrival of the California Mid-Winter Fair & Fiesta is more anticipated than the arrival of Christmas.

“We know most people are attracted to the ‘fiesta’ part, but we aren’t,” said Gabby Celaya, chapter secretary. “The fair isn’t the only thing we do, but it’s definitely a big part.”

In addition to raising animals the local chapter like many others participates in speeches, conferences and leadership retreats, which are made possible through the support of the community and advisers.

“We have a reputation of being a unit and a well-oiled machine,” said Gabby, a 17-year-old junior. “We don’t falter and that is passed down from our advisers (Mike Campbell and Emillee Callens) to the officers and to the members.”

Due to the advisers’ influence, chapter committee chairman Sarah Shepherd said she hopes to return to Imperial as an FFA adviser or veterinarian.

“I wouldn’t want to teach anywhere else,” Sarah, a 15-year-old sophomore said. “Being in FFA helped me decide I wanted to be a vet or teacher, so I’m hoping I can do the same for others students some day.”

Chapter reporter Mia Somenek said she felt the community support set her chapter apart from the rest.

“The community, school and teachers are unbelievable supportive of all of us,” Mia, a 16-year-old sophomore said. “Everyone always participates in our activities and buys things from us throughout the years. It’s a very good feeling.”

In an effort to continue growing as a chapter, the officers often visit the feeder schools to talk about the opportunities FFA has to offer.

“I think it’s important we let the younger kids know FFA preps you for college and life,” said Jose Noriega, chapter president. “Through FFA we’ve all become comfortable talking in front of a large crowd, we’ve learned time management and we’ve visited some really cool places.”

Chapter vice president John Goodspeed said being in FFA has taught him to be more open minded.

“Our chapter is a mix of band kids, jocks, cheerleaders and even chess club members,” John, a 17-year-old senior said. “We’re all different, but FFA makes us family.”
