The Anchorage Police Department’s goal to have no motorist die in a dangerous driving crash during 2012 has been successful so far, according to Anchorage Police Lt. Dave Parker.

“So far this year we have avoided any OUI traffic related fatality,” Parker says.  “We want to keep it that way through the whole year.”

As of May 2, 604 drivers had been arrested for operating a vehicle under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

The downward trend has continued since 2001, when there were 20 OUI fatalities. Last year that number dropped to three.

“We saw that with our increase in OUI enforcement that the traffic fatality due to OUI accidents had dropped off tremendously,” Parker says. “With a strong enforcement we see those fatalities don't take place.”
