(MULVANE, Kan)—The Sumner County Casino is open for business. Players club members are already gambling at the Kansas Star Casino as a way to get staff trained for major crowds. The soft open started this week, to try and work out any problems before opening to the general public Monday.
So far, casino management say they've had few issues and that things are running smoothly. Wednesday there were 4,000 people gambling, just about that many more were expected by the end of Thursday.
Visitors say they while they were excited to check out the new casino, they're most excited about the convenience of the location. Right now many of the gamblers drive to Oklahoma to play. "This is nice. I like this, I can get here no problem," said Tura Burnett.
Casino manager Scott Cooper says by allowing only VIP members in now, the staff is getting used to how things run. He says when the doors open Monday morning, he expects thousands more to come check out what the casino has to offer.
One issue they are still working on is staff. Right now the casino has 500 employees and more are needed. They are still hiring gaming floor workers and back of house staff. They'll be needed to handle the expected crowds once the doors open to the public.
