A Berkeley Springs, W.Va., man was killed Saturday afternoon when his car struck a truck tractor head-on on the U.S. 522 bridge over the Potomac River, closing the span for hours, Maryland State Police said.
David Wayne Mccumbee, 52, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a state police news release.
Mccumbee, driving a 1988 Toyota Corolla, was coming from West Virginia, going north on the bridge.
Police said his car crossed the center line and hit a 2012 Freightliner truck tractor pulling a full-sized box trailer.
Jeffrey Edward Martin Sr., 40, of Petersburg, Va., was driving the Freightliner south into West Virginia. He was not injured, police said.
The U.S. 522 bridge was closed for about three hours.
State police were sent to the scene shortly after 1 p.m.
The Washington County Sheriff’s Office, Hancock police, West Virginia State Police, the Morgan County Sheriff’s Department and the Maryland State Highway Administration assisted Maryland State Police.
