Fire broke out in a commercial building on South Potomac Street on Wednesday night, causing thick, blinding smoke to spread through the neighborhood and around the intersection of South Potomac Street and Memorial Boulevard, a fire official said.
When firefighters arrived, heavy fire was coming out one side of the building that faces Memorial Boulevard, said Hagerstown Fire Marshal Doug DeHaven.
Fire fighters battled the fire from the exterior and were able to eventually enter the building to extinguish the blaze, which was reported just before 6:30 p.m., DeHaven said.
DeHaven said shortly after the fire was brought under control that it was too early to say what might have started the blaze.
The building is at 441 S. Potomac St., which is across from Bester Elementary School. People lined sidewalks by the school to watch fire fighters battling the blaze.
Although DeHaven said he did not know of a name for the building, the Maryland Department of Assessments & Taxation website listed the owner of the building as Cassidy Trucking Inc., 1221 Bruceville Road, Keymar, Md.
The property consists of 5.82 acres, the website said.
DeHaven said the inside of the building looked like a truck maintenance facility that may have not been used in a while.
The building was behind another commercial building that sits along South Potomac Street.
