Ed Milum said it can be tough to find a place open on Sundays to get a haircut, but after searching on Google Sunday morning, he found a Hagerstown salon where he got a haircut and was able to help a local nonprofit group at the same time.
Milum, 44, of Hagerstown, got a haircut at Universal Hair Studio, which was hosting its second annual Cuttin for Critters event to benefit the Humane Society of Washington County.
“Worked out perfect,” said Milum, who has a cat and a snapping turtle.
Linda Sue Renner held the event for the first time last year, the first year she had the hair studio on Dual Highway. That event raised $1,100 to help the humane society pay for parvovirus vaccines, Renner said.
This year, Renner donated 100 percent of haircut proceeds to the humane society and expanded the event by inviting several local vendors to her shop. The vendors donated gift baskets to be raffled off to benefit the humane society.
The vendors were selling items from Thirty-One, Avon, Tastefully Simple, Pampered Chef, jewelers lia sophia and Premier Designs, and Scentsy, which sells wickless candles.
Renner, who has two Japanese Chins, or spaniels, and a Shih Tzu, said people can buy raffle tickets through Saturday for the gift baskets.
“We’re thrilled to be able to partner with businesses in the community” like Universal Hair Studio, and do benefits to help the animals, said Ben Cross, the humane society’s event coordinator.
The humane society has a wish list of items it needs on its website, www.hswcmd.org, Cross said.
Steve Roger Bradburn, 60, of Hagerstown, got his hair cut at the salon a week ago, but stopped by Sunday to buy some raffle tickets and support Renner.
“This lady loves animals so much. Couldn’t help but come out and participate. It’s for a good cause,” Bradburn said.
Mel Short, 64, of Hagerstown, said he stopped at Universal Hair Studio for last year’s Cuttin for Critters because he needed a haircut and he spotted the ad for this year’s event at a time when he wanted a haircut.
Short owns a papillon, or toy spaniel, named Gizmo, named for the character he resembles in the 1984 movie “Gremlins.”
Stephanie Johnson, 47, of Waynesboro, Pa., said Renner has been cutting her hair since 1993. Johnson stopped by the shop Sunday with her husband, Andrew, 45, who got his hair cut by Terry Davis.
“We’re here to support the (humane) society, but we’re here to support Linda, too. We’re longtime customers,” Stephanie Johnson said.
Davis said the employees volunteered their time Sunday to help the humane society.
