Perhaps it was the long board meeting.

Gov. Martin O’Malley and Comptroller Peter Franchot, Democrats on the state Board of Public Works, gave punchy responses Wednesday to reporters’ questions about O’Malley’s proposal to apply the sales tax to gasoline.

O’Malley, responding to Franchot’s criticism of the plan, described him as “kind of our version of Mitt Romney,” referring to the Republican running for president.

O’Malley said Franchot likes to take opposite sides of issues and supported a gas tax increase when he was a legislator.

Franchot said he’s doing his job as comptroller in criticizing the plan.

He also told reporters, “I’m sorry if I’m getting in the way of his presidential efforts.”

O’Malley was mentioned in a recent New York Times news analysis as a possible presidential candidate in 2016.
