A Smithsburg man faces multiple charges after Hagerstown Police said he crashed into a telephone pole and another vehicle while fleeing police early Wednesday, according to a Hagerstown Police Department news release.
Charles Staley Shafer, 41, of 14B W. Water St., Smithsburg, was charged with fleeing from police, hit and run, driving with no insurance, reckless driving, assault, resisting arrest and other traffic charges, the release said.
At about 12:28 a.m., Hagerstown Police Sgt. Andrew Lewis stopped a vehicle for crossing the center line, according to the release. As Lewis approached the vehicle, the driver sped off, police said.
Officers pursued the vehicle for several blocks until it turned onto View Street. The vehicle then pulled away from officers at a high rate of speed and crashed into a telephone pole on View Street near Pangborn Boulevard, according to police.
The driver then crashed into another vehicle and attempted to back into a police cruiser before coming to a stop, the release said.
The man “became assaultive with officers, but was taken into custody,” according to the release.
