CUMBERLAND, Md. —
The State Highway Administration says it’s beginning a two-year project to renovate the Interstate 68 bridge over Cumberland.The Cumberland Times-News reports that preliminary work starts Tuesday.
The bridge is about six-tenths of a mile long. It carries traffic high above downtown buildings, railroad tracks and the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal at the confluence of Wills Creek and the Potomac River.
The agency says drivers should expect lane closures on the bridge and surface streets.
The nearly $14 million project includes sandblasting steel, strengthening concrete and sealing the road surface. Water drains and new lighting will be installed.
The bridge is 43 years old.
