County awards culvert contract
The Washington County Board of Commissioners awarded a contract Tuesday to replace culverts on Ernstville Road, Gilardi Road and Maugansville Road.
The commissioners voted unanimously to award the contract to Kinsley Construction of Hagerstown for $622,711.45, the lowest of six bids for the project, according to Robert Slocum, deputy director of public works.
The work will begin around Dec. 19 and is scheduled to be completed Aug. 29, 2012, Slocum said.
Traffic will be detoured throughout each project, he said.
The culverts on Ernstville and Gilardi roads were scheduled for replacement this fiscal year, but the Maugansville Road culvert had been scheduled for replacement in fiscal 2016. It was moved up because flood damage this fall made replacement necessary, Slocum said.
The county will defer a culvert project on Spur Road until 2016 and use those funds for the Maugansville Road culvert replacement, the commissioners agreed.
Commissioners endorse SCIP plan
The Washington County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously Tuesday to accept the Strategic Community Impact Plan, or SCIP, as one of the tools the county will use in decision-making.
The plan was created under the leadership of United Way of Washington County and the Community Foundation of Washington County.
It includes 44 goals for improving the quality of life in Washington County and recommended strategies for achieving each goal.
