The Washington County Board of Education sent a proposed school calendar for next school year back to a committee to see if it could make changes to designate an entire week off for spring break in 2014.
Some board members and the student representative on the board noted the proposed calendar for the 2013-2014 school year called for having schools closed the Thursday, Friday and Monday around Easter, which will be April 20, 2014. The calendar also listed schools to be closed for students on March 27 and 28 for professional development for employees.
Scheduling factors include a state law requiring schools to be closed the Friday and Monday around Easter, and a contractual obligation to provide planning time at the end of marking periods, school system officials said.
After defeating a motion to approve calendars for the next two school years by a 5-1 vote, the board voted 6-0 to set Wednesday, Aug. 21, as the first day of school for the upcoming school year.
Board member Paul Bailey cast the lone vote to approve the two proposed school calendars as is. Board member Donna Brightman was absent.
