Washington Schools superintendent to hold 'listening sessions'

Community members will have a chance to pose questions to Washington County Public Schools Superintendent Clayton Wilcox this week as he holds three public “listening sessions,” according to an email from school system spokesman Richard Wright.

The sessions, which begin at 6:15 p.m., will be held:

• Tuesday at South Hagerstown High School, 1101 S. Potomac St. in Hagerstown’s South End

• Wednesday at North Hagerstown High School, 1200 Pennsylvania Ave. in Hagerstown’s North End

• Thursday at Hancock Middle-Senior High School, 289 W. Main St., Hancock

Each session will include brief remarks from Wilcox and a time for questions and answers.

Good luck to all who attend and ask questions, he's not listening anyway. Wilcox has changed the curriculum at Smithsburg High School (soon to be rolled out to the other schools in the county) and students' schedules are a disaster. Parents asked questions and voiced their concerns about his new system to no avail. Now there are honor roll students that must attend summer school because they are behind in mandatory coursesto graduate. These students are not upper classman, this is happening to freshman.

It is perplexing that with every new superintendent in the county, all previous superintendents did not know what they were doing and we have to change the entire program.

To all the parents from the other schools in the county, be ready to take ownership of your child's education. The board is limiting your child's ability to take advanced classes because of the reduction in the number of classes per day and they seem indifferent to listen. For example, if your child chooses to take band as a freshmen, get ready for summer school because there is not enough room in the schedule to take other required classes, like tech ed. Completely forget about more advanced classes, there simply is not enough time in four years to get to them. Simply put, if you are an advanced student get ready for a mediocre watered-down education.
