The Cash-for-Clunkers program helped the auto industry boost car sales. Now 300 million taxpayer dollars will be made available to boost the sales of appliances, and get more energy efficient devices into American homes.

Appliances often get repaired, instead of being replaced, during tough economic times. Starting this Fall the government will provide $50 to $200 rebates for the purchase of high efficiency refrigerators, washers, dryers and diswashers.

The sales manager at Kiva Kitchen and Bath on the Southwest Freeway in Houston says customers buy other things once they decide to purchase new appliances.

"If someone comes in and they are going to change out their appliances they'll change out either their sink and faucet, and their cabinet hardware, and even their cabinets," said Chas Daniels of Kiva.

Texas will be allocated more than $23 million, and you won't actually have to turn in your old appliance.
