The Critton Hollow String Band will perform in Hancock Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Hancock Performing Arts Center, Town Hall, 126 W. High St.
Tickets cost $5 at the door. Band members Joe Herrmann, Sam Herrmann and Joe Fallon are joined by Pete Gordon for the concert.
Joe Herrmann, singer and multi-instrumentalist, has been making music for more than 45 years, and co-founded the Critton Hollow String Band with his wife, Sam Herrmann, in 1975.
They have toured internationally and recorded eight albums.
According to Joe, the band started playing informally on the streets of Annapolis in 1975.
Robbie Gordon joined them playing up and down the East Coast.
Finally, the band was hired by David Adams at nearby Coolfont Resort and began playing there regularly.
Their style of music includes traditional, country roots music featuring banjo, guitar, dulcimer, fiddle and bass.
The members live near Paw Paw, W.Va.
The Hancock Arts Council sponsors the concert as part of its continuing mission to enrich our community through the arts.
Bocce champs
Remember last week when I reported about our bocce champs?
Well, they took the gold at the Maryland State Championships last Thursday at Hagerstown Community College.
With a regular season record of 13 wins and one loss, Hancock was placed into Division 5 at the state tournament.
Hancock, one of the smallest high schools in the state, is the only Washington County team to win a state championship in bocce.
The two-time Washington County champions claimed their first state title, winning it in a 16-3 victory over Frederick (Md.) High.
“We got lucky against Northern Garrett and got a few good shots,” said Hancock coach and math teacher Ben Draper. “The kids are all excited (about winning the title). It’s nice to see the kids all blend together.
One of our kids said it best when he spoke the other day at our basketball game. ‘You don’t have to be a great athlete to know that athletics are great.’”
