Ellie Bare, a student in Susan Bonebrake's fourth-grade class, won the contest. Ellie received a T-shirt, backpack, medal and an invitation to the county commissioners award program.
Breakfast planned
Potomac Valley Fire Co. in Dargan will hold an all-you-can-eat breakfast of pancakes, sausage, sausage gravy, scrambled eggs and drinks Saturday from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the fire hall. Tickets cost $5 per person. Children eat free. This will be the last breakfast until October.
Lions plan food stand
The Sharpsburg Lions will sell hotdogs at their stand in front of the Sharpsburg School during the annual Memorial Day Parade, May 28. The Lions will also attend the Multiple District Convention in Salisbury, May 12 to 15, and a White Cane Banquet in Westminster, Md., May 26. A regular meeting will be held May 19. The club meets the first and third Thursdays at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 209 W. Main St., Sharpsburg.
Zumba with Anita
Anita Binder will offer summer Zumba classes at Mount Nebo United Methodist Church's new Community Fellowship Hall beginning Saturday, May 14 through Saturday, Aug. 27 at 10:30 a.m. Classes cost $2 per class when purchasing a 15-class punch card. Class punch cards are valid to be used at both St. Mark's and Mount Nebo Zumba classes. Those ages 13 and older are welcome. Binder is a certified group fitness instructor and a licensed Zumba instructor.
Grow It, Eat It, Preserve It workshops
The Washington County Agricultural Marketing Department, in partnership with the University of Maryland Extension, will present a series of four workshops focusing on the methods and best practices for preserving foods. All workshops are held at the Ag Center's multipurpose building at 7303 Sharpsburg Pike. The 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. workshops will be held on the following dates:
- May 24 — Jams and Jellies and Water Bath Processing
- June 9 — Pressure Canning Low Acid Foods
- July 19 — Preserving the Perfect Pickle
- Aug. 11 — Canning Tomatoes and Making Salsa
The workshops cost $35 apiece or $70 for all of them.

Master Gardeners offer workshop
The Washington County Master Gardeners will offer a trellis workshop Saturday, May 14, from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at the Ag Center on Sharpsburg Pike. Guests will learn which plants grow well on trellises, different trellis styles and get hands-on experience building a trellis. The class costs $10. Center provides free answers
The University of Maryland Home and Garden Information Center phone hot line and website provides free answers to gardening questions and access to hundreds of free garden publications. Specially trained master gardeners staff a toll-free hot line Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Anyone can ask a gardening question or get help diagnosing a garden problem by calling 1-800-342-2507.
