Ava Gift, Americanism chairwoman of Sharpsburg American Legion Auxiliary Unit 236, presented monetary awards and ribbons to the winners of the annual Americanism Essay Writing Contest March 21 at Sharpsburg Elementary School.  

Rachael Cochran, daughter of Chris and Claire Cochran, won $25 for first place. Colton Bare, son of Scott and Julie Bare, received $15 for second place. Sara Hynen, daughter of David and Michele Hynen, received $10 for third place.

Unit 236 presented Principal Kathy Kelsey with a $25 check for the school library along with a $50 check to be used in an emergency fund for students who might not be able to afford to attend school field trips.

Breakfast planned  

Potomac Valley Fire Co. in Dargan will hold an all-you-can-eat breakfast of pancakes, sausage, sausage gravy, scrambled eggs and drinks Saturday from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m. Tickets cost $5 per person. Children eat free.

 

O’Connor at library  

Civil War author Bob O’Connor will talk about the Sharpsburg connection to his books, “The Virginian Who Might Have Saved Lincoln” and “The Life of Abraham Lincoln: As President” Thursday, April 7, at 7 p.m. at the Sharpsburg Public Library.

Church offers meal  

Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, at the corner of Church and Main streets in Sharpsburg, is offering Tuesday’s Table, a free meal open to the community Tuesday, April 5, starting at 5:30 p.m. at the church. All are welcome.

 

Ruritan plans basket bingo

The Keedysville Ruritan Club will hold a basket bingo Saturday, April 9, at the Little Antietam Community Center on Mount Vernon Drive in Keedysville.

Doors will open at 4 p.m. and bingo starts at 6 p.m. Tickets cost  $15. There will be 25 games, tip jars and basket raffle. Baskets will be filled (some are Easter baskets).

Food will be available.

Proceeds benefit the scholarship funds and Washington County community service projects.  

Lions to hold Easter egg hunt  

The Sharpsburg Lions Club will hold an Easter egg hunt for Sharpsburg children ages 12 and younger Sunday, April 24, at 2 p.m. at the Sharpsburg Little League field.

All Lions are welcome to attend the Pie Call at Reeders Memorial Home (April 5) and the Fahrney Keedy singalong (April 14).  Cake bakers are also needed each month, too!  A regular meeting will be held in the Den April 7.  A $10 per person turkey dinner will be served at the Leader Dog Banquet April 19.  Proceeds from the auction at the banquet go toward Leader Dogs.   

The club meets the first and third Thursdays at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 209 W. Main St., Sharpsburg.
