Donna Newcomer will begin as the new principal of Maugansville Elementary School, effective Sunday,
Newcomer would like the community to know that she is thrilled to become a part of the learning community.
Professionally, she has experienced teaching prekindergarten through third grade, as well as serving as an elementary principal at Hancock and Fountaindale elementary schools.
She has also taught a variety of undergraduate and graduate classes in education at Frostburg State University, Hood College and Hagerstown Community College.
Most recently she has served in a variety of Washington County Board of Education Central Office positions, including supervisor of staff development, supervisor of elementary education, assistant director of human resources, and most recently, director of human resources.
Newcomer has two grown sons. Caleb is a manager at Hempen Hill Restaurant in Fountainhead Plaza.
Leif, who lives in Baltimore, is pursuing a degree in nursing.
In her spare time, she enjoys weeding her flower beds and boating on the Chesapeake Bay.
Newcomer brings much experience and an array of skills and interests to the position. Please take the time to welcome her and help her feel at home.
Although the 2012 Youth Extravaganza at Haven Lutheran Church has been postponed until the fall, the Captive Free concert is still on at the church at 1035 Haven Road in Hagerstown.
The concert will be held Saturday, July 7, starting at 7 p.m.
The event will include music, skits and fun with Captive Free, a Christian band that travels throughout the eastern United States.
The community is invited. No tickets are necessary; a free will offering will be accepted at the door for the band’s ministry.

Vacation Bible school
St. John’s Episcopal Church, 101 S. Prospect St., will host its annual vacation Bible school from July 15 to 19. The year’s theme is “Sky — All Things Are Possible With God!”
The school will begin with supper at 5:30 p.m., followed by classes from 6 to 8 p.m.
It will be a week of activities, including a biblical storyteller, imagination station, games and crafts. Classes are targeted for those ages 3 to adult.
