Miss Poppy presents mayor with poppy
Miss Poppy, Sophie Burnett, the 10-year-old daughter of Chase and Jaime Burnett of Sharpsburg, presented Sharpsburg Mayor Hal Spielman with a poppy before the May 7 town council meeting.
Sophie’s father was unable to attend the ceremony because of his deployment in Afghanistan.
Before introducing Miss Poppy, Darlene Eichelberger, the poppy program chairwoman, thanked the mayor and council for allowing them to keep the tradition of presenting the first poppy of the year to the Sharpsburg mayor.
Cochran places first in 24 Game Challenge
Sharpsburg Elementary School fifth-grader Kaitlin Cochran placed first in the annual 24 Game Challenge at Hagerstown Community College May 3.
Fifth-graders Ellie Bare placed second, Grace Roupe placed third, and Morgan Dyer finished in the final 16.
Coaches and teacher Kim Rishell and Kristen English encouraged and guided the students through many hours of practice over the last two months. The high scores show that all the hard work and dedication paid off for the students.
Sharpsburg Elementary names good citizens
Sharpsburg Elementary School nominated 14 students for exemplifying all the character traits of a good citizen. The students enjoyed lunch at the “Golden Table” with counselor Jacklyn Kinzer and had ice-cream sundaes to celebrate their accomplishments.
Cemetery donation drive to begin
The donation drive for the maintenance of the Samples Manor Church of God cemetery will be held Saturday and Sunday, May 26 and 27, from 8 a.m. to dusk at the cemetery. Church to hold gospel sing May 27
Samples Manor Church of God on Harpers Ferry Road near Dargan will hold a Memorial Day gospel sing Sunday, May 27, at 2:30 p.m.

Churches to sponsor Bible school in June
The Sharpsburg Main Street churches will sponsor a community Bible school from Sunday, June 10 to June 14 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 209 W. Main St. in Sharpsburg.
The Bible school will begin at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday with a community picnic. On Monday to Thursday, it will begin at 5:30 p.m. with a light supper for students and staff. The theme of this year’s Bible school is “SKY” and the Bible verse is Mark 10:14.

Otzelbergers plan family reunion June 3
A reunion of the Peter Otzelberger family will be held Sunday, June 3, at 1 p.m. in Pavilion No. 4 at Martin “Marty” Snook Memorial Park in Halfway.
