Scout Troop 103 members qualify for top honor

Two members of Boy Scout Troop 103 recently became the first from the new troop to be accepted into the Order of the Arrow, the Boy Scouts of America’s National Honor Society.

First Class Scout Benjamin Forrest and Scoutmaster Mark Forrest completed requirements at Camp Sinoquipe in Fort Littleton, Pa.

Troop 103 is chartered by the Rotary Club of Long Meadows in Hagerstown.


North High Choral Boosters to hold dinner

The North Hagerstown High School Choral Boosters are holding a spaghetti dinner Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the high school.

The menu includes spaghetti with meat sauce, tossed salad, breadsticks and cake. Drinks will be iced tea, coffee and lemonade.

The cost is $8. Children 5 and younger are admitted free.

There will be a choral homecoming concert at the school at 7 p.m. Tickets cost $3 for students and $5 for adults, with free admission for children 5 and younger.


Speaker to discuss Christian/Muslim issues

Jay Smith, an expert in Christian/Muslim apologetics, will be the guest speaker on Sunday at 9:30 and 10:45 a.m. at the Paramount Brethren in Christ Church on Longmeadow Road.

Apologetics is a branch of theology devoted to the defense of the divine origin and authority of Christianity.

Smith will speak on two topics, “Where Islam is Today and What Our Response Should Be” and “How the Gospel Wins Every Time.”

Smith has participated in more than 50 formal debates with Muslim scholars around the world.

Marine Corps League to host birthday ball

The second annual birthday ball will be hosted locally by the Marine Corps League on Saturday at AMVETS Post 10 on Frederick Street in Hagerstown.

The guest speaker will be Maj. Stewart Hickey USMC (Ret.), a 22-year veteran who recently became the national executive director of AMVETS in Washington, D.C.

Activities will include a banquet, cake cutting and awards presentation.

Music will be provided by The Holders.  

Tickets cost $16 per person or $30 per couple.

TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) Club 0077 members had a 39-pound weight loss for the week.

The best TOPS losers were Charlie House and Valerie Eccard. The best KOPS (Keep Off Pounds Sensibly) losers were Darla Hartley, Louise Cline and Lu. Lu won the ha-ha box. The no-no snack for the week is ice cream.

Dr. Linda Potts presented a program on recognizing and managing stress.

The Taking Off Pounds Sensibly Chapter 0446 thinner winner and runner-up for the week were Judy G. and Judy H. with losses of 4.6 and 3.8 pounds, respectively. DeAnn won the ha-ha box and volunteered to do future awards presentations, along with Darlene. Henry joined as a new member.

Mary led a discussion based upon two questions she received in an email.
