One lane and the left shoulder of U.S. 340 in both directions are subject to closure from the Maryland-Virginia state line to Rohrersville Road (Md. 67), according to the Maryland State Highway Administration's website.
The lanes are being closed so debris can be removed from a containment system under the U.S. 340 bridge over the Potomac River near Harpers Ferry, according to Geoff McCammon, spokesperson for the Maryland State Highway Administration.
McCammon said that the containment system was put in place to catch debris that would be a result of the U.S. 340 Bridge Rehabilitation Project, which involves cleaning and maintenance work on the bridge.
The maintenance work, according to McCammon, includes minor repairs needed to the bridge and repainting parts of the bridge. It is expected to be completed in the spring of 2012.
The road is expected to reopen Wednesday afternoon, McCammon said. Work on removing the debris began Tuesday.
