HAGERSTOWN—Work to repair a broken water main and a sinkhole caused by escaping water is expected to continue through Friday afternoon, a city spokeswoman said Tuesday.
Crews have been working since 3 a.m. Monday to repair the broken water main on West Baltimore Street between Hood Street and Summit Avenue.
The leak created a sinkhole that measured 12 feet long, 6 feet wide and 4 feet deep.
Mary King, the city's communications director, said that West Baltimore Street in the area of the sinkhole will remain closed until 4:30 p.m. Friday.
Motorists using Baltimore Street will be forced to detour around the work area via other city streets, King said in a a news release.
Work crews will attempt to allow local traffic to access properties in this block during the closure, she said.
Emergency vehicles will not be able to pass through this block of West Baltimore Street while the work is being performed, according to the release.
