A 120-year-old building on West Main Street will be reopened as an assisted-living facility later this year.
The owners of Village of Laurel Run in Fayetteville, Pa., are working to buy Waynesboro’s former Rose Manor.
They anticipate finalizing the sale by mid-October, according to Frank Gerhardt, one of the owners.
“It just hit us at the right time where we thought there can be a synergy between the Village of Laurel Run and this building,” Gerhardt said.
Gerhardt said changes will be made to the back entrance and remodeling will occur on the first floor before the facility opens. Later, HVAC improvements will be made on the upper floors.
Named The Leland of Laurel Run, the personal care community is expected to be licensed for 75 beds in a variety of room layouts. It will have companion and single rooms as well as two- and three-room suites.
“We think that is one of the advantages of the building,” Gerhardt said.
The center’s name references the old Leland Hotel, a former use of the building mentioned repeatedly by community leaders, he said.
Gerhardt said Village of Laurel Run officials knew of the building well before it was listed for sale.
“We’ve looked at it over the years,” he said.
The Leland of Laurel Run will share some specialists with the Fayetteville campus, Gerhardt said. It will have its own executive director and a staff of up to 50 when at capacity, he said.
People who benefit from personal care are those who need assistance with activities of daily living, such as bathing, dressing, remembering to take medications, orientation and using the bathroom, according to Gerhardt.
Individuals struggling with forgetfulness can be more at ease in a safe, caring environment, Gerhardt said.
Gerhardt joins George Desmond and Larry Cottle in owning the Village of Laurel Run, which they bought 12 years ago, and a Lancaster County, Pa., facility. They recently sold Tranquillity in Frederick, Md.
“We think our reputation is going to precede us, and we’re looking forward to getting started” in Waynesboro, he said.
